Abstract: Vehicles and methods are provided for monitoring the health of a substrate and a protective coating disposed on the substrate. A vehicle includes a substrate, a protective coating, a coating deformation sensor, and a controller. The protective coating is disposed overtop the substrate. The coating deformation sensor is operatively coupled with the protective coating and configured to measure a deformation value of the protective coating. The controller is configured to: determine a deformation recovery rate of the protective coating based on the deformation value; determine whether the deformation recovery rate corresponds with an expected recovery rate of the protective coating; and indicate that the protective coating may be impaired in response to determining that the deformation recovery rate does not correspond with the expected recovery rate.

Abstract: A method of retrieving a lost item from a compartment to an owner of the lost item is provided. The method comprises detecting the lost item in the compartment to define an item image of the lost item relative to the compartment, updating an inventory list of lost objects, and identifying at least one potential user of the lost item. The method further comprises providing notification to the at least one potential user and providing viewable access of the item image. The method further comprises verifying ownership of the lost item to define the owner of the lost item, determining a preferred pickup location for the owner, storing the lost item at the preferred location defining a stored item, and confirming identity of the owner for retrieval of the stored item at the preferred location. The method further comprises allowing access to the stored item from the preferred location.

Abstract: A method and apparatus that address motion sickness are provided. The method includes receiving rider profile information, trip information, environmental information and vehicle dynamics information, determining a probability that a rider will suffer from motion sickness during a ride based on the rider profile information, the trip information, the environmental information and the vehicle dynamics information, in response to the probability being greater than a predetermined threshold probability corresponding to a rider, performing motion sickness mitigation functions, and in response to the probability being less than the predetermined threshold probability corresponding to the rider, monitoring the rider to detect rider response information indicating whether the rider will suffer from motion sickness during the ride.

Abstract: A method of notifying an owner of a lost item in a vehicle having a vehicle compartment is provided. The method comprises providing at least one sensor to sense the lost item in the vehicle compartment. The method further comprises identifying the owner of the lost item by way of a perception algorithm, providing notification to the owner of the lost item, and providing viewable access of the item image such that the image is viewed by the owner of the lost item.

Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for mitigating motion sickness. When motion sickness is predicted, the motion sickness mitigation system alters vehicle performance, cabin conditions, and/or alerts the occupant to upcoming vehicle actions, to avoid or alleviate motion sickness. A controller includes a processor that receives an occupant profile and traffic information for an upcoming trip of the vehicle on a route. Using the occupant profile and the traffic information, the processor calculates whether the occupant will experience motion sickness when the vehicle travels on the route. A vehicle performance signal correlated to the calculation, is delivered by the processor to initiate motion sickness mitigation. The vehicle performance signal varies operation of a steering actuator, an acceleration actuator, and/or a brake actuator to implement the motion sickness mitigation.

Abstract: A system for designing a driving system for a vehicle. The system includes a first sensor, a second sensor and a processor. The first sensor is configured to obtain an external parameter indicative of a lane marking during a time period in which an automated driving program is being operated at the vehicle. The second sensor is configured to obtain an internal parameter of the vehicle during the time period. The processor is configured to detect a lane touch event occurring during the time period, determine an error occurring in the driving system resulting in the lane touch event based on the internal parameter and the external parameter, identify a failure domain of the driving system in which the error occurs, and change a design of a program of the driving system related to the failure domain.
