    摘要: A muffler includes an upstream outer shell, a downstream outer shell, and identical upstream and downstream inner baffles forming in combination an upstream expansion chamber, an inner expansion chamber, and a downstream expansion chamber. The upstream and downstream inner baffles divide the inner expansion chamber therebetween into a main chamber and first and second laterally spaced subchambers. The upstream and downstream inner baffles have respective sets of apertures therethrough laterally offset from each other and aligned with respective subchambers and communicating exhaust from the upstream expansion chamber through the set of apertures in the upstream inner baffle into the first subchamber and then flowing laterally through the main chamber to the second subchamber and then flowing through the second set of apertures into the downstream expansion chamber. Each of the upstream and downstream inner baffles has a second set of apertures and drawn portions providing an oppositely directed bypass flow passage relieving backpressure.

The internal baffle defines a first chamber (36) between the internal baffle and the upstream outer shell. The internal baffle has an extension portion (38) extending away from the upstream outer shell and toward and into the downstream outer shell and forming second and third chambers (40 and 42) between the internal baffle and the downstream outer shell and forming multiple sound attenuating tubed passages (44 and 46, 114, 124 and 128) bounded by the downstream outer shell and the extension portion and connecting the second and third chambers on distally opposite ends (48 and 50) of the extension portion. The baffle has an opening (52) therethrough adjacent the extension portion and connecting the first and second chambers.

    摘要: A muffler (12) has first and second outer shell members (14 and 16), and first and second inner baffle members (18 and 20). The inner baffle members are identical to each other and parallel to each other and rotated 180.degree. relative to each other about an axis (22) perpendicular to such parallel extension. The baffle members have oppositely facing laterally offset formed expansion chambers (32 and 34) partially overlapped to provide exhaust flow communication therebetween. The structural combination enables usage of identical components (18 and 20), which improves manufacturing efficiency and provides a cost reduction.

    摘要: A ramming device for compacting soil includes an upper mass and a lower mass. The lower mass is driven linearly back and forth with respect to the upper mass to compact material therebelow. An engine drives the lower mass and is supported by the upper mass. A muffler is fluidly connected to the engine and is contoured such that a majority of the muffler is positioned inboard of a footprint of a side of the ramming device. Preferably, the muffler has a shape that substantially matches a shape of the upper mass adjacent to the muffler thereby further reducing the distance that the muffler extends beyond a footprint of a sidewall of the device.

    摘要: The cylindrical enclosure 12 of a recuperator 10 as in FIG. 2 contains an annular coaxial heat exchanger 50 full of cooling liquid 22 circulating therethrough. Exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine flows from an inlet end 32 through the heat exchanger 50, first in an axial region 15 via a conduit 14, then back through a surrounding annular region 18, then through tubes 37 to an outlet end 34. The inlet 30 and outlet 31 for the gas are in the side wall 40 of the cylindrical body 12, and the exhaust gas 11 enters and leaves via conduits 14 and 19 that are perpendicular to the side wall 40 at the inlet 30 and at the outlet 31. So the ends 41 and 42 of the body 12 are free of adjacent obstruction, and at least one of them is removable, as in FIG. 4 or FIG. 5 . Thus, the recuperator 10 can be opened and closed to make the interior accessible for inspection, cleaning, or other desired purpose.

A tapered tubular metal screen is disposed within the outlet conduit of a muffler and has a axis concentric with the axis of the conduit. The screen has a closed end preferably facing in a downstream direction with respect to gas flow, and the opposite open end of the screen is attached to the conduit. The screen acts to reduce the sound levels without increasing the overall size of the muffler and with a minimum increase of weight.

    摘要: A particulate trap exhaust muffler for use with a diesel engine and comprising a casing having an internal wall dividing the casing into an inlet chamber and an outlet chamber. The wall is formed with a plurality of openings and a plurality of generally parallel tubes are disposed within the outlet chamber with one end of each tube being mounted within one of the openings in the divider wall, while the other end of each tube is closed. At least a portion of the length of each tube is formed with perforations or holes. A cylindrical particulate trap is spaced concentrically outward of each tube to provide an annular chamber therebetween. Exhaust gas entering the inlet chamber flows into the tubes and through the perforations into the respective annular chambers to decrease the sound energy, and then passes outwardly through the cylindrical traps where particulate material is trapped and burned off. The exhaust gas then is discharged from the outlet chamber through an outlet.
