The process controllers can access the I/O cards in a similar manner to I/O cards used to connect to field devices. Inter-controller communications can be programmed as general I/O communication.

A safety device is coupled to each of the first and second transmission paths and includes a control unit adapted to detect a fault condition associated with the communication bus. The safety device further includes a switch unit adapted to interrupt the flow of electrical signals along each of the first and second transmission paths in response to the detected fault condition. In this manner, the detection circuitry of the communication bus automatically reduces or prevents the occurrence of sparks or arcing in the event of a fault condition associated with the communication bus.

The present invention provides an optical filter assembly that reduces the phase and amplitude noise of a detection laser used to detect ultrasonic displacements. The filtered detection laser is directed to the surface of a remote target. Ultrasonic displacements at the surface scatter the filtered detection laser. Collection optics then gather phase modulated light scattered by the surface and direct the phase modulated light to an optical processor to produce a signal representative of the ultrasonic displacements with an improved SNR. Additional processors may determine the structure of the remote target.

A technique is provided for manufacturing a multi-anode photomultiplier tube for use in positron emission tomography (PET) detectors. One or more optical properties within an entrance window of the multi-anode photomultiplier tube are altered at a focal spot via a laser. The focal spot is translated relative to the entrance window for creating a three-dimensional pattern within the entrance window. This three-dimensional pattern having the one or more optical properties altered is adapted to control the spreading of optical photons within the entrance window.

Included are steps of pairing waveforms based on the determined time offsets of the waveforms, calculating an arrival time difference for each pair of waveforms and determining a timing resolution value based on the calculated arrival time differences, determining whether the timing resolution value meets predetermined minimization criteria, and updating the set of parameters for the prototype waveform and the weighting function and repeating the determining, pairing, calculating, and determining, when the timing resolution value fails to meet the predetermined minimization criteria.
