The optical stack also includes an optical adhesive layer that is disposed on the light directing film. At least portions of at least some unitary discrete structures in the plurality of unitary discrete structures penetrate into the optical adhesive layer. At least portions of at least some unitary discrete structures in the plurality of unitary discrete structures do not penetrate into the optical adhesive layer. The peel strength of the light redirecting film and the optical adhesive layer is greater than about 30 grams/inch. The average effective transmission of the optical stack is not less or is less than by no more than about 10% as compared to an optical stack that has the same construction except that no unitary discrete structure penetrates into the optical adhesive layer.

The light extraction film includes a flexible substrate, a layer of low index engineered nanostructures applied to the substrate, and a high index backfill layer applied over the nanostructures. The multi-periodic zones include a repeating zone of the nanostructures having multi-periodic characteristics. The repeating zone includes first and second sets of nanostructures having different periodic pitches. The multi-periodic zones can be used to enhance the light output and tune the angular luminosity of organic light emitting diode devices.

A fluoropolymer coating composition contains a homogeneous mixture of crystalline submicron fluoropolymer particles dispersed in a solvent-borne solution of less crystalline or amorphous fluororesin. The composition may be prepared by blending a latex containing crystalline submicron fluoropolymer particles with a latex containing less crystalline or amorphous fluororesin particles, coagulating and drying the blended latices, and dissolving the dried blend in a solvent for the fluororesin particles. Quasi-homogenous compositions may be prepared by blending dry crystalline submicron fluoropolymer particles with a) dry less crystalline or amorphous fluororesin particles and a solvent for the fluororesin particles, or b) a solvent-borne solution of less crystalline or amorphous fluororesin. Rubbing the disclosed coatings can provide a thin, continuous or nearly continuous fluoropolymer surface layer atop a less crystalline or amorphous fluororesin binder containing crystalline submicron fluoropolymer particles.

Extended area lighting devices include a light guide and diffractive surface features on a major surface of the light guide. The diffractive surface features provide low distortion for viewing objects through the light guide. Light from discrete light source(s) is injected into the light guide, and the diffractive surface features interact with the injected light to couple guided-mode light out of the light guide. The out-coupled light produces one or more bands whose apparent shape changes with viewing position. The bands may be bright bands that correspond to the discrete light sources, or dark bands associated with an optional non-uniform reflective structure extending along a side surface of the light guide. Multiple bands may form a pattern that changes with viewing position, the pattern of bands having a 3-dimensional appearance for at least some viewing positions. The lighting devices can be used as luminaires for general lighting or decorative lighting.

A first light transmissive medium optically contacts the first but not the second diffractive features. The first and second portions may define indicia, and the first and second diffractive features provide low distortion for viewing objects through the light guide such that the indicia is not readily apparent to users when guided-mode light does not propagate within the light guide. Optical films having such diffractive features are also disclosed.
