Abstract: A stator for a generator includes a ferromagnetic core with two or more poles arranged about a rotation axis, a direct current (DC) field coil, and four or more alternating current (AC) coils. The DC field coil is wrapped about the pole. A first of the AC coils is wrapped about the pole at a location circumferentially spaced from a second of the AC coils. Generator systems and methods self-exciting synchronous reluctance generators are also described.

Abstract: A starter-generator module for a gas turbine engine includes an inner stator portion with an armature defining a rotation axis and an outer rotor portion disposed about the rotation axis. The outer rotor portion includes a permanent magnet and a gear teeth member. The permanent magnet is disposed about the rotation axis and the gear teeth member is defined on the outer rotor portion such that the gear teeth member transmits rotational energy to an accessory gearbox in a start mode and receives rotational energy from the accessory gearbox in a generate mode.

Abstract: Embodiments herein relate to a permanent magnet (PM) dynamoelectric machine. The machine includes a drive shaft, a stator assembly having a ferromagnetic stator core, a plurality stator teeth mounted to the stator core with distal ends proximate the inner radial periphery of the stator assembly and a plurality of stator coils mounted between the stator teeth, and a PM rotor assembly with multiple PMs, a ferromagnetic rotor core, a plurality of ferromagnetic rotor teeth mounted to the rotor core with distal ends proximate an inner periphery of the stator assembly separated by an air gap, and at least one control coil, the at least one control coil wrapped about a saturable region of each the rotor teeth. Each saturable region of the rotor teeth is operable to divert air gap magnetic flux (Φg) generated by the PMs across the air gap through the distal ends of the rotor teeth.

Abstract: An assembly for a direct current (DC) synchronous machine, according to an exemplary aspect of the present disclosure includes, among other things, a stationary portion including a direct current (DC) armature winding and a rotating portion including alternating current (AC) field winding configured to supply DC output to the DC armature winding. A rotating inverter is configured to selectively communicate current to the AC field winding such that a frequency of the current is adjusted to approach synchronization with a position of the rotating portion. A method for generating DC output from a DC synchronous machine is also disclosed.
