Abstract:
The invention provides a process and apparatus for controlling combustion in an Otto combustion engine in which the control variables that control combustion are determined for a particular power cycle as a function of the detected combustion course of a preceding power cycle. According to the invention, a desired burn-through function value for a particular power cycle is precalculated based on values of pertaining influence factors detected in a preceding power cycle, to determine an actual burn-through function value of the particular power cycle in real time. The desired burn-through function is compared with the actual burn-through function and actualized values for the burn-through function influence factors are determined. These factors are used to determine the control variable values for a subsequent power cycle.
Abstract:
In an arrangement for operating the intake and exhaust valves of an internal combustion engine wherein valve actua-ting and coupling levers are pivotally supported in side-by-side relationship on a lever support shaft extending parallel to an overhead cam shaft, and the coupling and valve actuating levers have guide bores receiving a coupling bolt so as to be movable into and out of a coupling lever and valve actuating lever coupling relationship and further a hydraulic valve clearance compensating element is disposed in a bore formed at the end of the actuating lever adjacent a valve, the guide bore center axis is spaced from the lever support shaft axis by a distance which is greater than the distance between the guide bore center axis and the axis of the valve clearance compensating element, and the support lever shaft axis, the center axis of the guide bores and the engagement line of the cam define approximately an isosceles triangle whose sides of equal length are formed by the distance between the engagement line and the lever support shaft axis and the distance between the cam engagement line and the guide bore center axis and the camshaft is disposed at least partially above the valve actuating and coupling levers.

In a cylinder-head-mounted camshaft bearing structure for an internal combustion engine in which the camshaft bearings are mounted on the cylinder head by bearing caps arranged in spaced relationship from one another and the bearing caps have aligned mounting holes receiving rocker-arm support shafts for pivotally supporting the rocker arms between said bearing caps and the bearing caps are further interconnected by longitudinal webs so as to form an integral frame-like bridge unit, transverse webs are disposed between said caps in spaced relationship therefrom and interconnect the longitudinal webs so as to define between the transverse webs and between the webs and the adjacent bearing caps spaces receiving the rocker arms.

Abstract:
In a valve actuating system for a multicylinder internal combustion engine having a camshaft supported in bearing pedestals on the cylinder head of the engine with rocker arms pivotally supported by rocker arm support shafts also mounted on the bearing pedestals and coupling levers arranged adjacent at least some of the rocker arms and including hydraulically operable coupling devices for engagement with the adjacent rocker arms, at least one of the bearing pedestals includes a pressure control space to which oil under pressure is supplied and the rocker arm support shafts have internal fluid flow passages in communication with the pressure control space and with the coupling devices so that pressurized fluid can be admitted to the coupling devices under the control of valve means disposed in the bearing pedestal.
Abstract:
In a valve operating system for an internal combustion engine with overhead valves and a camshaft supported by a bearing bracket mounted on the cylinder head for the actuation of the valves via a rocker arm arrangement comprising for at least one of the valves a main rocker arm and adjacent thereto an auxiliary rocker arm adapted to be coupled to the main rocker arm for superimposing its movement as controlled by its associated cam structure onto the main rocker arm which operates the associated valve, a spring supporting element which engages the auxiliary rocker arm so as to maintain it in contact with the associated cam structure engages with its one end the auxiliary rocker arm and is supported with its other end on said bearing bracket.
