The invention relates to the use of polyolalkyl ethers in detergents and as rinse agents for automatic dish detergents, particularly for multifunctional dish detergents. Preferred polyolalkyl ethers correspond to general formula (I): in which R1, R2, R3 and R4 independently of one another represent OR5, CH2—OR5, OH, CH3, C2H5 or H, the substituents R5 independently of one another representing a hydrogen atom or a saturated, unsaturated, branched or unbranched hydroxyalkyl or hydroxyalkenyl group containing 10 to 22 carbon atoms.

Branched, substantially unsaturated fatty alcohol sulfates are produced by a process which comprises the steps of: (a) dimerizing unsaturated C16-22 fatty acid to form a dimer fraction and a monomer fraction comprised of branched, substantially unsaturated fatty acids and straight chain saturated fatty acids, (b) removing the monomer fraction from the dimerization step, (c) converting the branched, substantially unsaturated fatty acids from step (b) into the corresponding fatty acid methyl esters, (d) hydrogenating the branched, substantially unsaturated fatty acid methyl esters with the double bonds intact to form the corresponding branched, substantially unsaturated fatty alcohols and (e) sulfating and neutralizing the branched, substantially unsaturated fatty alcohols. The fatty alcohol sulfates thus produced exhibit improved performance properties and greater oxidative stability than standard unsaturated fatty alcohol sulfates.

Disclosed are derivatives of isosorbide having formula (I) wherein R′ and R″ represent hydrogen or a polymeric ether moiety (CH2—CHR1—O)x—H, where R1 represents hydrogen, or an alkyl or alkenyl moiety having 1 to 33 carbon atoms, which is saturated or unsaturated, branched or linear. This polymeric ether moiety can be a homopolymer or a copolymer, with x being the total degree of polymerization (DP). Preferred is a block copolymer composed of monomer A (DP=a), preferably ethylene oxide or propylene oxide, and monomer B (DP=b), preferably a saturated or unsaturated, branched or linear alkyl or alkenyl moiety having 1 to 33 carbon atoms, where x=a+b. x is a number from 0 to 50, with the proviso that R′ and R″ are not both hydrogen. The isosorbide derivatives are useful as components of detergent, cleanser, cosmetic and agricultural compositions.

Methods of preparing and using the hydroxy mixed ethers are also described.

Processes for preparing alkylene glycol esters of dimer fatty acids according to the general formula (I): H—(OR)n—O(O)C—R1—C(O)O—(RO)n—H (I) wherein R1 represents a hydrocarbon radical of a dimer fatty acid having from about 24 to about 44 carbon atoms, and each R independently represents an alkyl radical having from about 2 to about 3 carbon atoms, and each n independently represents a number of from about 0.25 to about 3.0, are described. The processes include: (a) providing dimer fatty acids; (b) providing an alkylene oxide; and (c) reacting the dimer fatty acids and the alkylene oxide, in the presence of a catalytically-effective amount of at least one alkanolamine.
