A pneumatic sensor is provided for detecting and indicating the tension in running strand material, such as yarn, wire and the like. A source of compressed air is connected to an air escape nozzle having an outlet opening in one end thereof and a closing member is supported adjacent the outlet opening and is normally spaced a predetermined distance from the outlet opening to regulate and partially restrict the escape of air therefrom. The strand engages the closing member and varies the space or gap between the closing member and the nozzle outlet in accordance with the amount of tension in the strand. A pressure gauge is provided for indicating the amount of air pressure in the pneumatic pressure system and for thereby indicating the amount of tension in the running strand. A pressure/electric transducer is operable by the pneumatic pressure system and may operate a control system for a variable speed motor in a yarn take-up system to vary the takeup rate to maintain a predetermined tension on the yarn being taken up. The variation in air pressure in the pneumatic pressure system may also be utilized to operate a pneumatic cylinder for varying the braking force applied to a wire let-off beam in an unwinding operation so that the tension in the wire is maintained within a predetermined tension range.

A method and apparatus for producing a ribbon free randomly wound yarn package is disclosed, and wherein a plurality of critical winding ratios at which undesirable pattern formations or ribbons would normally occur are determined and stored in a microprocessor control unit. During the winding operation, the spindle speed and traversing frequency are monitored by sensors and are transmitted to the control unit, and the control unit computes the optimum time for rapidly changing the traversing frequency so that the actual winding ratio moves rapidly through each of the approaching critical winding ratios. The original traversing frequency is re-established after having passed beyond each of the critical winding ratios.

High-speed cross-winding apparatus with two traverse motion devices for winding elongated materials, especially continuous filaments, into packages and embodying a reciprocable thread guide as a first traversing device, and a second traversing device in the form of a roller with spiral, thread-guiding grooves, the first and second traverse motion devices being driven synchronously, and a drive roller for driving the package being driven independently thereof. The grooves of the latter traverse roller have variable depth for winding tension uniformity, and may also temporarily accelerate stroke velocity above the stroke velocity of the first traverse device immediately before and/or after stroke reversal. The groove depth increases from the middle of the roller to a maximum depth preceding the stroke reversal point and then either (a) immediately and continuously decreases in depth or (b) immediately decreases, then increases and then again decreases in depth.

A winding apparatus is disclosed which includes a rotatable revolver having a pair of spindles mounted thereon, with the spindles being adapted to coaxially mount one or more bobbin tubes. Upon rotation of the revolver, the spindles are moved between a winding position and a doffing position, and a traversing mechanism is provided for traversing an advancing yarn and so as to form a cross wound package on the tubes at the winding position. Means are also provided for automatically transferring the advancing yarn from the rotating full package which has been moved to the doffing position, to a rotating empty bobbin tube on a spindle which has been moved to the winding position, and which comprises a yarn lifting device for removing the advancing yarn from the traversing means and conveying the advancing yarn laterally to a yarn catching plane, and a yarn transferring mechanism which laterally deflects the yarn from the yarn catching plane to a bead plane which is within the normal traverse stroke.

A method and apparatus for winding a textile yarn into a cross-wound package is disclosed, in which the yarn is wound about the package at a substantially constant rate while the yarn is guided onto the package by a traversing guide. In order to avoid the formation of ribbons on the package, the traversing frequency of the yarn guide is periodically varied by shortening the stroke of the traversing yarn guide while maintaining an unchanged traversing speed of the traversing yarn guide. The avoidance of the formation of ribbons is also accomplished by varying the traversing speed of the traversing yarn guide during the times in which the traversing frequency of the traversing yarn guide is unchanged. Stops are provided for controlling the length of back-and-forth movement of the traversing yarn guide and the stops can be moved inwardly and outwardly to provide the required stroke modification of the traversing guide. Several specific embodiments of the yarn traversing apparatus are disclosed, and wherein the traversing apparatus includes gripper means mounted on a slide which is positioned between parallel runs of a drive belt, and control means for moving the gripper means to alternately engage the two runs of the belt and thus reciprocate the slide.

A yarn handling apparatus is disclosed for a textile yarn winding machine of the type having a plurality of side by side winding positions extending along the length of the machine. A separate yarn handling apparatus is associated with each winding position, and each handling apparatus comprises an assembly which includes yarn catching means, yarn severing means, and yarn suction means for withdrawing the severed yarn end. The assembly is mounted for movement along a predetermined path of travel between a first end position located on the upstream side of the spindle and where the yarn catching means is adapted to engage the running yarn as it moves in its predetermined yarn traverse stroke, and a second end position located on the opposite side of the winding spindle and where the running yarn is adapted to be engaged by a yarn catching and severing notch on the associated empty bobbin tube. An embodiment is also disclosed wherein the winding machine includes a draw roll system, and there is further provided a movable yarn suction means for threading the advancing yarn about the draw roll system so that the yarn is helically disposed about groups of the draw rolls.

A yarn traverse apparatus is disclosed for winding a running yarn onto a rotating package, and which includes a first traverse means comprising a guide rail, and a pair of oppositely rotating arms mounted for rotation about closely adjacent parallel, or coaxial axes. A second traverse means is also provided which comprises a grooved roller positioned between the first traverse means and the yarn package being wound. In order to achieve a precise guidance of the yarn onto the package, the first yarn traverse means defines a guide stroke which extends beyond each of the ends of the traverse stroke defined by the grooved roller. In addition, the guide rail and/or the arms include means for guiding the yarn adjacent each of the ends of the guide stroke such that the yarn is free to rapidly rebound a short distance toward the center of the stroke, and is then restrained during movement through a second traverse distance.
