    摘要: The invention is an optical disk drive which controls mechanical feedback to a focus servo actuator by shifting the phase of the feedback along its path back to the servo an additional 180 degrees to eliminate the degradation of the phase margin and prevent servo instability. The phase shift may be induced at any practical location along the feedback path. The phase shift is preferably induced by creating a slit or opening in the base of the optical disk drive. The opening must be positioned properly, shaped appropriately, and large enough to create a new base resonant frequency which prevents the opposite sides thereof from vibrating in phase. Alternatively, the phase shift may be induced by altering other components in the feedback path. For example, the phase shift can be induced by modifying the spindle motor assembly to create a new spindle resonant frequency.

    摘要: An optical disk drive is disclosed in which sensing the position of a tilting prism driven by a fine tracking actuator uses the optical beam prior to its interaction with an optical disk. The optical beam emitted by a laser is redirected by the tilting prism. Most of the optical beam is reflected by the tilting prism in a direction through an objective lens for focused interaction with an optical disk. assuming a disk is mounted in the optical disk drive. The remainder of the optical beam is transmitted through the tilting prism, including any offset of the beam resulting from the refraction characteristics of the tilting prism, and received by a split far field detector. The split far field detector measures the offset of the optical beam which is a direct measure of the rotational position of the tilting prism. A relative position error signal is then generated and input to the coarse tracking actuator to coordinate its operation with that of the fine tracking actuator.

    摘要: Magnetic tape devices encounter read and/or write errors when the tape is not being passed across the head with the proper tension and/or skew angle. According to one embodiment, a system which corrects for these problems comprises a head having an array of at least one of readers and writers, a drive mechanism for passing a magnetic recording tape over the head, a skew-inducing mechanism coupled to the head for adjusting a skew angle of a longitudinal axis of the array relative to a direction normal to a direction of tape travel over the head, and a controller in communication with the head. The system also determines a tape dimensional stability state of the tape and adjust the skew angle away from normal to the direction of tape travel and lowers a tension of the tape across the head if the tape dimensional stability state is in a contracted state.

    摘要: Four embodiments of disk cartridges are described. Each embodiment is made from a unitary blank of foldable material, such as paperboard or plastic. The cartridges are particularly useful for containing and protecting 130 mm optical disks. Shown are interior brackets integrally formed on panels of the cartridges and that extend to and engage a facing panel for both stiffening the cartridge axially of the contained disk and for physically restraining the contained disk from radial movements in the cartridge. The cartridge may have information containing holes. The interior brackets also stabilize the panel immediately adjacent the hole for enabling mechanical hole sensing. An interior bracket is shown as being integral with one end wall of the cartridge. Notches in two side walls of the cartridge are provided for facilitating automatic cartridge handling.

    摘要: Described are embodiments of an invention for customizing the range of acceptable write conditions to a tape of a tape cartridge that contracts or expands laterally based on environmental conditions. The tape drive utilizes servo information to determine if the tape has expanded or contracted from the nominal dimension and to determine the magnitude of the expansion or contraction. In the case of expansion, the magnitude of the determined expansion and the stored maximum amount of contraction must be below a predetermined threshold value to allow a write. In the case of contraction, the magnitude of the determined contraction and the stored magnitude of expansion must be below the same predetermined threshold value to allow a write. If the determined magnitude of contraction or expansion is greater than the stored magnitude of contraction or expansion, respectively, then the new extreme is stored.

    摘要: A tape cartridge comprising a housing, a tape reel disposed within that housing, where that tape reel is capable of rotation around a first axis, and where that tape reel includes a hub and a reel coupling which is engageable with a motor coupling for rotation of the tape reel. The tape cartridge further includes a brake plate disposed within the hub, where that brake plate is capable of moving in a first direction and in an opposing second direction along the first axis, but where the brake plate is not capable of rotation around the first axis. The brake plate includes a first side, an opposing second side, a brake plate gear disposed on the second side, and a fixturing assembly disposed on the first side. The tape cartridge further includes a clutch plate disposed within the hub, where that clutch plate is capable of moving in a first direction and in an opposing second direction along the first axis, and where that clutch plate is capable of rotation around the first axis. The clutch plate includes a first surface, an opposing second surface, where the second side of the clutch plate is rotatably disposed on the second side of the brake plate, and where one or more release pins are disposed on the first surface of the clutch plate, and where those release pins each include a distal end which extends through, and outwardly from, the cartridge.

    摘要: A cartridge which comprises an adapter cartridge and a caddy is employed for containing a hubless optical disk which can be processed in a standard optical disk drive for cartridges, such as an optical disk drive for an optical disk storage library. The adapter cartridge and the caddy are each provided with a recess so that when the adapter cartridge and the caddy are mated an enclosure is provided for the disk. The adapter cartridge carries a floating hub which engages a spindle in a drive for rotating the disk. The standard drive has a shutter arm which is employed for first ejecting the adapter cartridge from the drive and then is employed for ejecting the caddy and the disk from the adapter cartridge. This makes the caddy and disk readily accessible to a picker of a storage library for transport purposes or to an operator.
