A polysaccharide derivative prepared by replacing all or part of the hydroxyl hydrogen atoms of a polysaccharide or polysaccharide derivative by (A) a hydrophobic substituent having a C.sub.8 -C.sub.43 hydrocarbon chain as the partial structure and (B) an ionic hydrophilic substituent having at least one member selected from the group consisting of sulfonic, carboxyl phosphoric, and sulfate groups and salts thereof as the partial structure, wherein the average degree of replacement by the substituent (A) is 0.0001 or above but below 0.001 per constituent monosaccharide residue as determined by Zeisel's method or the diazomethane method and that by the substituent (B) is 0.01 to 2.0 per constituent monosaccharide residue as determined by colloidal titration. This polysaccharide derivative is useful as the admixture for hydraulic materials and can give stable hydraulic compositions excellent in dispersion.

A process for producing a glyceryl ether which contains a markedly small amount of organohalogen compounds and therefore can be used even for cosmetics and body detergents. The process comprises reacting an alcohol with an &agr;-epihalohydrin in the presence of an acid catalyst, subjecting the reaction mixture to ring closure to convert it into the corresponding glycidyl ether and then hydrolyzing the glycidyl ether, wherein: (a) the hydrolysis is effected at 140 to 230° C. in the presence of a salt formed from a strongly basic compound and a weakly acidic compound, or (b) the reaction mixture after the hydrolysis is heated at 100 to 230° C. in the presence of a salt formed from a strongly basic compound and a weakly acidic compound.

The invention relates to a detergent composition comprising (A) 0.5 to 60% by weight of a surfactant selected from the group consisting of anionic surfactants, nonionic surfactants and amphoteric surfactants, (B) 0.01 to 20% by weight of a conditioning component, and (C) 0.1 to 30% by weight of a monoglyceryl ether having a linear or branched alkyl or alkenyl group having 4 to 12 carbon atoms. The composition is excellent in foaming performance, gives users a pleasant feeling upon use and brings about a sufficient conditioning effect on the skin and hair.
