Abstract: Techniques for the design and operation of an efficient battery-powered meter are described herein. A metrology unit of the meter may be at least partially located in the gas flow of a pipe, and measures gas flow rate data according to a static flow sensor. The metrology unit calculates raw gas-volume data using at least the flow rate data as input. The metrology unit measures gas temperature to produce gas temperature data, and adjusts the raw gas-volume data, based at least in part on the gas temperature data, to produce corrected gas-volume data. The metrology unit accumulates the corrected gas-volume data over multiple minutes, hours or even days, and then sends the accumulated corrected gas-volume data to an index unit of the meter. By accumulating the data over time, fewer data transmissions are required. The index unit may send the accumulated the accumulated corrected gas-volume data to a utility server.

Abstract: A power management device is adapted to reduce power consumption, particularly in battery-powered applications such as within a node in a utility network (e.g., in a gas, water, or other utility application). In one example, a low-current voltage regulator provides power to a processor during low-power “sleep” states. A high-current voltage regulator provides power to the processor, metrology devices and/or a radio during “awake” states. A buck-boost device may provide power to a transmitter during radio frequency (RF) transmissions. A max device may determine a greater of voltages output by a battery and the buck-boost device, and use the higher to power the high-current voltage regulator. The power management device may include a state machine, which may include several states and operations to perform within each state. In one state, the processor enters a sleep state prior to recovery of battery voltage after a transmission state.

Abstract: A data collection device capable of communicating with an endpoint device over a network comprises a first communication means for low data rate messaging, a second communication means for high data rate messaging, and a controller configured to send a wake-up command including a request for data to the endpoint device at a low data rate via the first communication means, the wake-up command requiring the requested data to be transmitted at a high data rate, and receive the requested data from the endpoint device at the high data rate via the second communication means. When transmission via a high data rate is not required, data may be transmitted to the data collection device at the low data rate via the first communication means. The wake-up command may involve a regularly scheduled request for data, an unscheduled request for data, and/or an alarm event. Various methodologies are also disclosed.

Abstract: An endpoint device capable of communicating with a data collection device comprises a first communication subsystem for low data rate messaging, a second communication subsystem for high data rate messaging, and a controller in communication with the first and second communication subsystems, where the first communication subsystem may be used as a primary means of communications with the data collection device, and the second communication subsystem may be used as needed for high data rate communications with the data collection device. The controller may turn on the second communication subsystem for scheduled or unscheduled transfer of data at a high data rate, in response to receiving a wake-up command from the data collection device, in response to receiving an alarm event at the endpoint device, etc. A wake-up command may include a request for data between scheduled data transfers, a parameter change request, etc. Various methodologies are also disclosed.
