Described is a process for preparing hydrogenated derivatives of 2,6,6-trimethyl cyclohexene derivatives by means of treating said derivatives with hydrogen in the presence of a supported palladium catalyst such as palladium-on-calcium carbonate or palladium-on-barium sulfate in the presence of a quinoline activator. The resulting products are useful for their organoleptic properties as foodstuff flavorants and flavor enhancers, perfume composition ingredients, perfumed article ingredients and tobacco flavorants and flavor enhancers.

Described is a process for augmenting or enhancing the aroma and taste of a smoking tobacco comprising adding to said smoking tobacco an organoleptic property modifying quantity of a composition of matter comprising more than 50% trans,trans-.DELTA.-damascone and in addition a process for augmenting or enhancing the aroma and taste of a smoking tobacco comprising adding to said smoking tobacco in an organoleptic property modifying quantity a product produced according to the process of (i) reacting 1-alpha-acetyl-2-alpha,6,6-trimethyl-3-cyclohexene with strong base in aqueous ethanol at reflux thereby producing 1-alpha-acetyl-2-beta,6,6-trimethyl-3-cyclohexene; (ii) reacting the 1-alpha-acetyl-2-beta,6,6-trimethyl-3-cyclohexene with n-methyl aniline Grignard thereby forming a first organometallic compound; (iii) reacting said first organometallic compound with acetaldehyde thereby forming a second organometallic compound; (iv) reacting said second organometallic compound with acid in order to hydrolyze said second organometallic compound thereby forming a hydroxy ketone having the structure: ##STR1## in admixture with other compounds; (v) dehydrating said hydroxy ketone in admixture with other compounds thereby forming a mixture having a major proportion of trans, trans-.DELTA.-damascone having the structure: ##STR2## in admixture with cis, trans-.DELTA.-damascone having the structure: ##STR3## and in admixture with other compounds; and in addition smoking tobacco products containing same.

Described is a method for augmenting or enhancing the aroma or taste of smoking tobacco or smoking tobacco articles by adding to smoking tobacco or to at least one section of the smoking tobacco article, e.g., the paper, the filter or the body of tobacco, a mixture consisting essentially of:(a) from about 0.5 up to about 7% by weight of said composition of n-hexanal;(b) from about 5 up to about 21% by weight of said composition of n-octanal;(c) from about 30 up to about 80% by weight of said composition of n-nonanal;(d) from 0 up to about 40% by weight of said composition of n-decanal;(e) from 0 up to about 7% by weight of said composition of n-tetradecanal;(f) from about 7 up to about 12% by weight of said composition of n-heptanal;(g) from 0 up to about 12% by weight of said composition of n-undecanal; and(h) from 0 up to about 12% by weight of said composition of n-dodecanal. Particularly, on smoking the side stream is modified and masked. The smokey, phenolic, cresolic odor is covered and the aroma in the environment around the smoked cigarette is clean and slightly citrusy.
