摘要: An apparatus and method for performing nucleic acid (DNA and/or RNA) sequencing on a single molecule. The genetic sequence information is obtained by probing through a DNA or RNA molecule base by base at nanometer scale as though looking through a strip of movie film. This DNA sequencing nanotechnology has the theoretical capability of performing DNA sequencing at a maximal rate of about 1,000,000 bases per second. This enhanced performance is made possible by a series of innovations including: novel applications of a fine-tuned nanometer gap for passage of a single DNA or RNA molecule; thin layer microfluidics for sample loading and delivery; and programmable electric fields for precise control of DNA or RNA movement. Detection methods include nanoelectrode-gated tunneling current measurements, dielectric molecular characterization, and atomic force microscopy/electrostatic force microscopy (AFM/EFM) probing for nanoscale reading of the nucleic acid sequences.

摘要: An apparatus for carrying out the separation, detection, and/or counting of single molecules at nanometer scale. Molecular separation is achieved by driving single molecules through a microfluidic or nanofluidic medium using programmable and coordinated electric fields. In various embodiments, the fluidic medium is a strip of hydrophilic material on nonconductive hydrophobic surface, a trough produced by parallel strips of hydrophobic nonconductive material on a hydrophilic base, or a covered passageway produced by parallel strips of hydrophobic nonconductive material on a hydrophilic base together with a nonconductive cover on the parallel strips of hydrophobic nonconductive material. The molecules are detected and counted using nanoelectrode-gated electron tunneling methods, dielectric monitoring, and other methods.

摘要: Molecular devices using functional Photosystem I reaction centers are prepared on flat derivatized substrate surfaces. The nature and extent of orientation are controlled by chemical modification of the surface derivative. The surface of the substrate is chemically modified such that the Photosystem I reaction centers may be immobilized in a desired orientation. Preferably, a sulfur-organic compound is used to chemically modify the surface of the substrate. Depending on the type of chemical modification, the orientation of the reaction centers may be parallel to the surface, perpendicular to the surface in the “up” position, or perpendicular to the surface in the “down” position. The different orientations provide different electrical characteristics to the device.

摘要: A print head carriage of an impact printer is monitored by means of a segmented timing member which is separate from but coupled to and movable in coordination with the carriage. The segmented timing member is associated with a carriage drive motor and preferably comprises a toothed wheel which is rotated by a motor drive gear also used to move the print head carriage. The teeth of the toothed wheel are monitored by an optical sensor with a resulting series of pulses being accumulated to define the rotation of the toothed wheel and thereby the movement and position of the print head carriage. A home carriage position is directly indicated via a carriage position indicating member which is operated by the print head carriage to interrupt the optical sensor of the preferred embodiment.

摘要: An improved carcass transfer method and device are provided by which a single operator can readily raise, lower, and transport a whole beef carcass or other carcass to facilitate movement of the carcass both off of and onto overhead rail systems conventionally used for carcass transport and storage in meat packing plants. A portable cantilevered device having a lifting mechanism engages a roller-type trolley from which a carcass is suspended. The lifting mechanism preferably includes a hydraulic cylinder, which cylinder is in controlled communication with an oil reservoir. Pressurized air actuates various valves to effect a desired raising or lowering of the mast.

摘要: A mechanism is provided with a slide adjustment member that is mounted on a frame supporting a carriage assembly of a printer. The carriage assembly is pivotally mounted upon a support shaft carried by a frame. The slide adjustment member has indexing teeth that engage with a plurality of saw-tooth detents. The sawtooth detents are longitudinally disposed upon a surface that is at a slight angle in the range between 3 and 4 degrees, and preferably about 3.44 degrees with respect to the horizontal. Horizontal movement of the slide member over this angled surface causes the carriage assembly to pivot about the support shaft. In so pivoting, the printhead carried upon the carriage assembly is forced to move with respect to the platen, thus changing the paper thickness gap therebetween. Each indexed movement of the slide member past a detent tooth provides a change of 0.003 inches in the gap. This change is equivalent to the difference between single and double ply paper. Thus, the invention provides a simple, low cost slide member and sawtooth index surface for changing the paper gap between the printhead and platen.

摘要: A printer ribbon cassette mounting apparatus includes a pair of aligning posts and a pair of resilient latch members mounted on the lower surface of the cassette housing. The posts and latch members engage complementary openings in wall portions of the printer with which the cassette engages. Two restrainers extend from the lower surface of the cassette in parallel spaced relation to the latch members, and prevent excessive bending of said latch members.
