    摘要: A light exposure system is used to expose an alignment layer formed of anistropically absorbing molecules so as to allow alignment of subsequently applied liquid crystal polymer (LCP) molecules. The light incident on the alignment layer is polarized. When a single polarizer is used, the azimuthal polarization direction varies across the substrate carrying the alignment layer. Various approaches to reducing the azimuthal polarization variation may be adopted, including the introduction of various types of polarization rotation reduction element and in selecting an appropriate tilt angle for the light source. Furthermore, a reflective structure may be inserted between the light source and the alignment layer. Use of the reflective structure increases the total amount of light incident on the alignment layer.

    摘要: Described is a process for producing a microstructured composite article including the steps of: providing a tool with a molding surface that is suitable for forming a microstructure; applying to at least a portion of the molding surface a plurality of lines of a flowable, curable resin composition; contacting the resin composition with a substrate; curing the resin composition; and, transferring the resin composition to the substrate. Alternative embodiments include heating the molding surface or resin composition, or both, to aid in the flow of the resin composition. The advantage of this process is that is that the microstructured composite articles are able to be produced at high speed and are free of air bubbles.

    摘要: Flexible unitary lightguide and a method of making the same are disclosed. The lightguide includes a structured input side that includes a first pattern having smaller features superimposed on a second pattern having larger features. The lightguide further includes a structured top surface that includes a first region and a different second region. The first region includes a plurality of discrete light extractors for extracting light that propagates within the flexible unitary lightguide by total internal reflection. The second region includes a taper portion for directing light from the structured input side to the first region. The light extractors form a periodic array that has a first period along the length of the flexible unitary lightguide. The first period is such that substantially no visible moir fringes occur when the flexible unitary lightguide is used as a backlight in a pixelated display.
