The tread provides a tread running surface and comprises a first, radially outer tread layer comprising a first rubber compound and a second, radially inner tread layer comprising a second rubber compound, wherein the second tread layer is located radially adjacent to the first tread layer, and wherein the first rubber compound is different from the second rubber compound. The second tread layer comprises a plurality of integrally formed extensions of the second tread layer extending from the second tread layer radially outwardly to the tread running surface. The first rubber compound and the second rubber compound each comprise at least at least 30 parts per hundred parts of rubber (phr) of silica. Each of the extensions has a width as measured in the axial direction of the tire in a range of from 1 to 15 mm.

An anti-skid stud for insertion into the tread of a vehicle tire is disclosed. The stud comprises a support body part extending in an axial direction and a pin body part, the support body part comprising a bottom portion, a middle portion, and a head portion having an upper surface, wherein the pin body part extends beyond the upper surface of the head portion, and wherein, when viewed in top view onto the head portion, (i) the location of the center of gravity of the head portion is laterally offset from the center of gravity of the bottom portion; or (ii) the location of the center of gravity of the pin body part is laterally offset from the center of gravity of the bottom portion; or (iii) the location of the center of gravity of the pin body part is laterally offset from the center of gravity of the head portion; or (iv) the location of the center of gravity of the middle portion is laterally offset from the center of gravity of the bottom portion. Also, a pneumatic tire comprising a tread, the tread comprising a plurality of such anti-skid studs is disclosed. The majority of the studs may be oriented in a common direction.

A tire mold is described that includes a plurality of tread molding segments having an inner surface for molding the tire tread. The mold further includes a plurality of sidewall plates having an inner surface for molding the tire sidewall. The tread mold segments together with the sidewalls cooperate to form a tire molding cavity. The sidewall plate further comprises a slot that extends from the outer surface of the tread segment to the inner mold surface, and has a pin extending from the outer surface of the tread segment. The pin is mounted to a rotatable body which can swivel. The rotatable body further comprises a guide pin which cooperates with a working member to rotate the body into a desired position in order to position the pin in the tire tread to be molded. The working member actuates the rotatable body into various positions.
