Apparatus is provided for use in a digital video signal playback device of the type having a record medium in which plural channels of digital video signals are recorded in a like plurality of tracks. Plural transducers, such as playback heads, are associated with respective ones of the channels and reproduce the digital video signals from the plural tracks, each transducer normally reproducing a respective, predetermined channel of the digital video signals. A detector detects the particular channel with which the digital video signal reproduced by each transducer is associated. A signal interchanger is provided with plural channel outputs and is responsive to the detector for directing digital video signals which have been reproduced by transducers associated with channels which differ from the channels of the reproduced digital video signals to the proper channel outputs as determined by the detector. Thus, regardless of the particular transducer which reproduces the digital video signals from a track, that digital video signal nevertheless is supplied to its proper channel output.

Preferably, there are eight blocks in each horizontal scan interval, and every fourth block is distributed to a respective head.

A method for recording a color video signal in a plurality of parallel tracks extending obliquely on a magnetic tape includes the steps of sampling the video signal at a frequency which is at least three times the color sub-carrier frequency of the color video signal, converting the sampled video signal into digital form, and recording respective pluralities of the digitized samples which are arranged in a predetermined sequence sequentially in the plurality of parallel tracks, by either recording respective pluralities of contiguous digitized samples sequentially in the tracks, in which each plurality corresponds to at least one cycle of the color sub-carrier, or by alternately separating contiguous ones of the digitized samples into first and second blocks and recording respective pluralities of successive digitized samples of the first and second blocks sequentially in the tracks with the sampling frequency being equal to four times the color sub-carrier frequency, such that the chrominance component of the digital color video signal can be separated during reproduction so as to correct any error in the phase of the color sub-carrier, and such that with the first embodiment of the last-mentioned step, a digital filter having a chrominance characteristic C=(1-Z.sup. -2)/2 can be used, and with the method according to the second embodiment, a fourth order digital filter having a chrominance characteristic C=(-1=2Z.sup.-2 -Z.sup.-4)/2 can be used to reproduce the chrominance component, where Z is a delay transfer characteristic of the respective filters.

A sync signal extracting circuit suitable for a digital information processing apparatus, such as a digital video tape recorder, is provided, which can promptly detect an incorrect sync state and which can quickly and accurately recover a correct sync state. The circuit extracts the sync signals or portions from a digital information signal consisting of a plurality of successive blocks, each consisting of N successive bits (where N is an integer) and each having a sync signal or portion consisting of a predetermined sync bit pattern and a data portion. The circuit comprises a sync bit pattern detecting circuit for generating a detected sync signal when it detects the occurrence of the sync bit pattern in the information signal, a counting circuit for providing a count having a successive one of N cyclical count values in response to each successive bit of the information signal and generating a counted sync signal at every Nth bit of the information signal, and a check mode circuit for memorizing the count of the counting circuit when the detected sync signal is generated other than in conjunction with the counted sync signal, for generating a checked sync signal if a detected sync signal is generated the next time the counting circuit equals the memorized count, and for changing the count of the counting circuit in response to the generation of the checked sync signal so that the counting circuit will be synchonized with the detected sync signals which gave rise to the checked sync signal.

An identification signal is generated to identify a digital signal, such as a digital video signal reproduced by a digital video tape recorder (DVTR), as odd or even. Commencing periodically, such as at the onset of each field interval, identification signals occurring at intervals in the digital signal are sampled, and an odd plurality (e.g., three) thereof determined to be error-free are stored. A synthetic identification signal is generated whose value is determined by the majority of the stored identification signals. The generated signal is then stored, for example, in a cascade of flip-flops, to provide a second synthetic identification signal from the onset of each field interval until the majority of the sampled identification signals is determined. In a circuit for processing a digital video signal, an identification signal for identifying line intervals as even or odd is derived by taking the modulo-two sum of field and frame identification signals to determine the state of the line identification signal at the beginning of each field, and thereafter inverting the identification signal at each line interval.
