First and second sensors (37), (39) are provided in a developing tank (36) containing a liquid developer consisting of a liquid carrier or dispersant and toner particles dispersed in the carrier. The first sensor (37) measures the electrical resistivity of the developer whereas the second sensor (39) measures the optical transmissibility thereof. Additional toner is supplied into the developer to maintain the transmissivity at a value which is a predetermined function of the resistivity. The transmissibility value is reduced as the resistivity increases, thereby maintaining the copy image density constant. The first sensor (37) includes two electrodes immersed in the developer and an A.C. or D.C. voltage is applied thereacross. The current flow through the electrodes (37) and thereby the developer is measured to determine the resistivity of the developer. Where the applied voltage is D.C., an arrangement is provided to mechanically scrape accumulated developer off the electrodes (37) at intermittent intervals.

The present invention provides a liquid crystal display device capable of shortening the time required for stabilizing the brightness and the chromaticity to the temperature change. The input of an LED driver is connected to the output of a PWM controller, so that the electric power supplied to the respective LED groups of red, green and blue are controlled with a PWM method. A feedback control means for controlling the PWM controller includes a brightness setting means, a color setting means, a multiplication means for receiving the outputs from the brightness setting means and the color setting means, a comparison means fed with the output of the multiplication means at one of the inputs thereof, a light sensor temperature compensation means for compensating for fluctuations of the output of the light detection means due to temperature changes, a liquid crystal display panel temperature compensation means for compensating for fluctuations of the spectral transmittance of the liquid crystal display panel due to temperature changes, an addition means for summing the result of detection by the light detection means and the output of the light sensor temperature compensation means, and a multiplication means for multiplying the output of the addition means by the output of the liquid crystal display panel temperature compensation means.

Disclosed is a gene carrier composed of a hydrogen-bonding polymer having a polymer chain with hydrogen-bonding sites formed on the polymer chain, in which the polymer chain has a conformation similar to the conformation of a nucleic acid, and particularly, the polymer chain has helix parameters similar to the helix parameters of a nucleic acid of a helix structure. In a preferred embodiment, the hydrogen-bonding polymer is composed of β-1,3-glucan such as schizophyllan. The carrier can be expected to be applied as a vector and a separator for nucleic acids because it is capable of interacting with a nucleic acid to form a complex with the nucleic acid and thus carrying the nucleic acid.

Disclosed are gene carriers utilizing β-1,3-glucan and methods of preparing the same. The β-1,3-glucan has at least one 1,6-glucopyranoside branch and is chemically modified through periodate oxidation and reductive amination so as to impart nucleic acid-binding functional groups (for example, cationic functional groups) to at least some of the 1,6-glucopyranoside branches thereof. Triple helix β-1,3-glucan is dissolved in a polar organic solvent to form single-stranded β-1,3-glucan. By replacing, in the presence of a nucleic acid, the polar organic solvent for the solution containing the chemically modified single-stranded β-1,3-glucan by water, a complex (gene carrier) is formed in which the nucleic acid is bound to double-stranded β-1,3-glucan.
