An objective lens converges a shorter wavelength laser beam on a DVD having a protective layer, which is 0.6 mm thick, and a longer wavelength laser beam on a CD having a protective layer, which is 1.2 mm thick. A common region is defined on the objective lens. The common region provides a numerical aperture appropriate for converging the longer wavelength laser beam on the CD. Coma of the objective lens in the first region is compensated better in a case where the longer wavelength laser beam is converged on the CD than a case where the shorter wavelength laser beam is converged on the DVD.

A minute optical head is provided so that a light source and one or more photo detector elements are integrated on the same substrate by a simple manufacturing process and may be applied to an apparatus for recording and reproducing recordable optical information. An apparatus for recording and reproducing optical information is arranged to have a minute optical head. A light waveguide layer composed of column semiconductor crystal is formed on a monocrystalline transparent substrate and an active layer is formed on the side of the light waveguide layer. The light beam source is a semiconductor having a vertical resonator formed of a high-reflection film before and after an emitting surface of the active layer so that a light beam is vertically radiated to the substrate. The photo detector element is integrated on the closer portion of the substrate to the light beam source of the semiconductor laser. Further, on the opposed surface of the substrate to the light beam source are sequentially integrated a first transparent layer, a diffraction grating, a second transparent layer, a phase difference generating element, a third transparent layer, a light beam focusing element, a fourth transparent layer, and a slide-resisting protective layer. The slide-resisting protective layer is located closer to and as opposed to the information recording medium.

The aperture diameter is made larger for the smaller pit size and vice versa, and the light source output is adjusted depending on the aperture diameter so that the light amount coming from the disk surface to a photodetector cannot be changed with the aperture diameter.

A short-wavelength laser having a stable output and an optical information processing system capable of high-density recording are disclosed. A solid-state laser is used as a light source, and a nonlinear optical crystal is arranged in a resonator in order to produce a short wavelength by means of a solid-state laser. The retardation of the nonlinear optical crystal is controlled by determining the length of the nonlinear optical crystal. A solid-state laser device having a stable output with the noise removed from a pumping power light source is also provided. Further, the solid-state laser device is used as a light source for the optical information processing system, and the light of irrelevant wavelengths contained in the light from the solid-state laser device are removed by a device having the ability to select wavelengths. Thus, not only a stable light source with a short wavelength but also an optical information processing system capable of high-density recording are realized.

An optical system for converting the shape of a light beam by making use of refraction of prisms comprises a prism optic which includes a complex prism constituted by combination of at least two types of prisms made of materials differing from each other in respect to dispersion of refractivity. An optical information processing apparatus includes the optical system employing the prisms. Geometric optical properties of the optical system are insusceptible to being changed irrespective of changes in wavelength of the light beam brought about by dispersion in oscillation wavelength of a light source, change in the course of time lapse, change in ambient temperature and/or change in emitted light energy. With the optical system, information processing is realized which is insusceptible to the influence of the change in wavelength of the light beam.

A recording/reproducing optical head capable of causing a light spot on a photodetector for detecting a focusing error signal to stand still without being affected by variations in wavelength of light used, capable of adjusting a tracking error signal independently of the focusing error signal, and capable of utilizing light having an order of diffraction of -1 for the purpose of detecting a signal, in which a cylindrical lens for generating astigmatism and a diffraction grating made up of two regions different in the direction of diffraction or the angle of diffraction from each other are interposed between a beam splitter and a photodetector, a light beam diffracted from the diffraction grating and including the diffracted light of the zero-th order (that is, light which has passed through the diffraction grating without being deflected) is received by the photodetector, the diffracted light of the zero-th order is used for detecting a focusing error signal according to the astigmatism method, and diffracted light having an order of diffraction of +1 and diffracted light having an order of diffraction of -1 are used for detecting a tracking error signal.
