The present invention is generally directed to new liquid-liquid extraction methods for the length-based separation of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and other 1-dimensional nanostructures. In some embodiments, such methods are directed to separating SWNTs on the basis of their length, wherein such methods comprise the steps of: (a) functionalizing SWNTs to form functionalized SWNTs with ionizable functional moieties; (b) dissolving said functionalized SWNTs in a polar solvent to form a polar phase; (c) dissolving a substoichiometric (relative to the amount of ionizable functional moieties present on the SWNTs) amount of a phase transfer agent in a non-polar solvent to form a non-polar phase; (d) combining the polar and non-polar phases to form a bi-phase mixture; (e) adding a cationic donor species to the bi-phase mixture; and (f) agitating the bi-phase mixture to effect the preferential transport of short SWNTs into the non-polar phase such that the non-polar phase is enriched in short SWNTs and the polar phase is enriched in longer SWNTs. In other embodiments, analogous methods are used for the length-based separation of any type of CNT, and more generally, for any type of 1-dimensional nanostructure.

A retaining ring and method of installation are provided to maintain the relative position of an inner joint to an outer joint in a constant velocity joint. The outer joint has an open end, a generally spherical internal surface with a plurality of ball grooves, and an annular groove formed in the internal surface near the open end of the outer joint. An annular ring with a radially extending tab is aligned within one of the ball grooves to axially align the tab with the annular groove. The annular ring is then rotatable within the annular groove to align the tab between two of the ball grooves. The annular ring is rotationally retained within the annular groove.

Helmet visor support apparatus is provided which can move the visor between raised and a lowered position by the operation of one hand. The apparatus comprises a visor support arm pivotally attached to the helmet at a pivot point for moving the visor between the raised and lowered positions. A positioning means is attached to the helmet at the pivot point and has at least two bores corresponding to the raised and lowered visor positions. A locking pin retractably engages either one of the bores in the positioning means to lock the visor support arm in position. A spring coiled around the locking pin normally biases the locking pin in engagement with one of the bores. A manually activatable retracting means is attached to the locking pin for retracting the locking pin from the one of the bores upon being manually activated, thereby allowing the visor support arm to pivot. The retracting means is supported on the visor support arm between the two ends thereof and is positioned to be activated by manual movement away from the pivot point and towards the visor.

A goggles emergency release apparatus is disclosed wherein an actuator, ptioned adjacent the goggles latching mechanism, drives a wedge into the mechanism to push a release pin into the open position and push the goggles away from the helmet. The actuator receives its initiation power when the ejection seat movement closes a microswitch.
