Hydrogen lithium titanate prepared by an acid process of lithium titanate and having pH of 11.2 or smaller or hydrogen lithium titanate expressed by general formula H.sub.x Li.sub.y-x Ti.sub.z O.sub.4 (where y.gtoreq.x>0 0.8.ltoreq.y.ltoreq.2.7 and 1.3.ltoreq.z.ltoreq.2.2) is disclosed. Hydrogen lithium titanate may be employed as active materials of positive and negative electrodes of a non-aqueous electrolyte secondary battery thereby realizing a charging capacity greater than a theoretical capacity. It is preferable that hydrogen lithium titanate is formed into a particle shape and includes voids in the particles. It is preferable that the largest particle size is 0.1 .mu.m to 50 .mu.m and the specific surface area is 0.01 m.sup.2 /g to 300 m.sup.2 /g. Hydrogen lithium titanate of the foregoing type can be manufactured by bringing lithium titanate into contact with an acid, such as acetic acid, to substitute protons for lithium ions.

A photocatalyst comprising inorganic porous particles having photosemiconductor particles deposited on at least a part of the surfaces and at least a part of the walls of the pores of the particles, and a photocatalyst comprising inorganic porous particles having photosemiconductor particles and microorganisms possessing water purification activity deposited on at least a part of the surfaces and at least a part of the walls of the pores of the particles are disclosed. The photocatalysts have a stable photocatalytic function for an extended period of time and easy separability from the treated water system so that it is useful for various photocatalytic reactions. Particularly they can be effectively used in water purification, and allow annihilation of harmful organisms such as algae, fungi and bacteria, decomposition of deleterious materials, as well as deodorization and decoloration to be conveniently and easily accomplished.

Disclosed are: a novel lithium titanate; and a method for producing the novel lithium titanate. Specifically disclosed is a compound that has a chemical composition represented by the general formula (1): Li2Ti18O37, or the compound additionally containing copper and/or tin. The compound represented by the general formula (1) is synthesized by causing a lithium compound to react with a compound that has a chemical composition represented by the general formula (2): H2Ti12O25 in a liquid phase so that some of hydrogen ions contained in the compound represented by the general formula (2) are substituted by lithium ions, and then carrying out solid-liquid separation and thermal dehydration. An electricity storage device which uses, as a constituent member, an electrode that contains an electrode active material produced from the compound represented by the general formula (1) has excellent charge and discharge cycle characteristics, especially excellent charge and discharge cycle characteristics at high temperatures, and is expected to have high capacity.

This invention provides a titanic acid compound-type electrode active material having a high battery capacity and, at the same time, having excellent cycle characteristics. The titanic acid compound exhibits an X-ray diffraction pattern corresponding to a bronze-type titanium dioxide except for a peak for a (200) plane and having a peak intensity ratio between the (001) plane and the (200) plane, i.e., I(200)/I(001), of not more than 0.2. The titanic acid compound may be produced by heat dehydrating H2Ti3O7 at a temperature in the range of 200 to 330° C., by heat dehydrating H2Ti4O9 at a temperature in the range of 250 to 650° C., or by heat dehydrating H2Ti5O11 at a temperature in the range of 200 to 600° C.
