    摘要: A driving method for a spatial light modulator can provide bright image, images of high contrast and resolution with no persistence and instability, and can be used in a projection display system. The spatial light modulator is prepared by sandwiching a ferroelectric liquid crystal layer between a first substrate and a second substrate. The first substrate is prepared by sequentially laminating a transparent conductive electrode and a photoconductive layer with rectifying properties on a glass substrate. On the photoconductive layer, a reflective layer and an alignment layer for aligning a liquid crystal layer are then laminated. The second substrate is prepared by laminating a transparent conductive electrode and an alignment layer on a glass substrate. Alternating current voltage having a waveform of inconsistent cycles is applied to a section between the transparent conductive electrodes.

Specifically, the light-modulating layer has: a first optical state when the applied charge amount is a first threshold charge amount or more; a second optical state when the applied charge amount is a second threshold charge amount or less; and a spatially uniform intermediate state between the first optical state and the second optical state depending on the applied charge amount. Also, a driving method for such a spatial light modulator is disclosed.

    摘要: A method for driving a spatial light modulator is disclosed. The spatial light modulator includes a ferroelectric liquid crystal layer, a pair of conductive alignment films sandwiching the ferroelectric liquid crystal layer, a pair of electrodes for applying a voltage to the ferroelectric liquid crystal layer for changing the state of the ferroelectric liquid crystal layer, a photoconductive layer disposed between one of the pair of electrodes and one of the pair of conductive alignment films. The method includes the steps of: (a) applying a reset pulse to the pair of electrodes for resetting the ferroelectric liquid crystal layer to an initial state; (b) applying a first low voltage to the pair of electrodes during a first interval starting from the end of the step (a); (c) applying a writing pulse to the pair of electrodes after the lapse of the first interval while illuminating the photoconductive layer with writing light; (d) applying a second low voltage to the pair of electrodes during a second interval starting from the end of the step (c), the second interval being longer than the first interval; and (e) applying a next reset pulse to the pair of electrodes for resetting the ferroelectric liquid crystal layer to the initial state.

A second substrate includes a counter-electrode which is opposed to the plurality of pixel electrodes. A pair of alignment films are disposed on the plurality of pixel electrodes and the counter-electrode, and control an alignment state of liquid crystal molecules, which are included in the liquid crystal layer, by rubbing treatment. Dummy display pixels are disposed on a terminal end side of the display section in a rubbing direction. A driving unit includes circuit for cyclically applying a reverse transition prevention signal to the dummy display pixels.
