Urea-aldehyde polycondensates usable as surface coating binders are obtainable by step-wise reaction of(a) urea and/or urea derivatives with acidic CH aldehydes in a molar ratio of urea:aldehyde of 1:2 in the presence of acids and at from 60.degree. to 120.degree. C. with(b) a mixture of 3 moles of formaldehyde per mole or urea and 3 moles of an acidic CH aldehyde per mole of urea at from 60.degree. to 120.degree. C. with subsequent removal of the water of reaction and treatment of the reaction mixture with an alkali metal alcoholate at from 80.degree. to 100.degree. C.

Condensates based on substituted ureas, their reaction products with di- and/or polyisocyanates, derivatives of di- and/or polycarboxylic acids or p-substituted phenols and/or their methylol derivatives, their preparation and their use. These condensates each contain two or more cyclic urea units and can be prepared either by reacting primary di- or polyamines with ureas and reacting the product with predominantly CH-acidic aldehydes or by reacting primary amines with isocyanates and reacting the product with predominantly CH-acidic aldehydes in the presence of an acidic catalyst. The said condensates and their reaction products are useful for the preparation of heat-curable coating materials and of binders for cathodic electrocoating.

Co-condensates are prepared by condensing from 0.8 to 2.0 moles of butyraldehyde with 1 mole of a phenol at from 80.degree. to 220.degree. C. with the addition, before, during or after the condensation, of from 5 to 50% by weight, based on the mixture of phenol and butyraldehyde, of one or more thermoplastics containing functional groups, which reacts with phenol, butyraldehyde or the phenol-butyraldehyde resin under the condensation conditions. The co-condensates are used as hot-melt adhesives and as binders for nonwovens.

A process is disclosed for insolubilizing casein coatings for leather utilizing alkoxy alkyl ureas. The coatings are cured in the presence of an acid catalyst. The casein coatings of the invention avoid the disadvantageous use of aldehydes such as formaldehyde and glutaraldehyde to cure the casein and reduce its water sensitivity and unexpectedly show improved wet abrasion resistance.

An improved process for dyeing or printing water-swellable cellulosic fibers and mixtures of said cellulosic fibers with synthetic fibers by contacting the fibers throughout with a dye liquor or print paste which contains, as essential ingredients, water in an amount sufficient to swell the cellulosic fibers, a water-insoluble disperse dye and a water-soluble solvent which maintains swelling of the cellulose if water is removed and which is a solvent for the disperse dye, and heating the contacted fibers to effect fixation of the dye, the improvement comprising using as water-soluble solvent a mixture of(a) polyethylene oxide, a block copolymer of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide or an ether, ester or carbamate derivative thereof and(b) a polyoxyethylated amine.
