A transition metal containing catalyst useful for the polymerization of .alpha.-olefins is prepared by (A) forming in an inert atmosphere which excludes oxygen and moisture a slurry of (1) a porous inorganic oxide support material selected from the group consisting of silica, alumina, or a combination of silica and alumina, said support material containing not greater than about 5 millimoles of hydroxyl groups per gram of support material and a particle size not greater than about 10 microns and a surface area of from about 50 to about 800 m.sup.2 /g in an inert organic liquid medium; (B) mixing said slurry with (2) an alkoxide and stirring the resultant mixture at a temperature of from about -20.degree. C. to about 120.degree. C. for a time sufficient to saturate the surface of the support material; (C) mixing the product form (B) with (3) a titanium compound or a combination of a titanium compound and (4) a vanadium compound and stirring the resultant mixture at a temperature of from about -20.degree. C. to about 120.degree. C. for a time sufficient to allow complete reaction of the titanium compound and the vanadium compound with the organomagnesium moieties remaining on the solid support; (D) mixing the product from (C) with an inert organic solution of (5) a Group IIIA metal alkyl halide at a temperature of from about -20.degree. C. to about 120.degree. C. for a time sufficient to complete the reduction of the titanium and vanadium, if present, compounds to their final oxidation state.

Copolymers of the present invention having the specified properties are especially useful in making the films.

This invention relates to cast films prepared from interpolymer compositions comprising; (A) a substantially linear ethylene/&agr;-olefin interpolymer present in the composition in an amount of from about 10 to about 100% by weight based on the combined weight of Components A and B; and (B) a heterogeneous interpolymer present in the composition in an amount of from about 0 to about 90% by weight based on the combined weight of Components A and B; and wherein said interpolymer composition has an I10/I2 value of −1.2−1.3* log(I2) The interpolymer compositions are useful in cast stretch film manufacture with the resulting cast films having an excellent balance of strength and processability.

The subject invention generally provides a multilayer structure that includes a polymer mixture made from at least two polymer component materials. The invention particularly pertains to a multilayer structure containing an improved sealant layer and a polypropylene layer, wherein the sealant layer is made from a homogeneously branched ethylene polymer having particular molecular weight characteristics and a second ethylene polymer. The sealant layer has balanced properties such low heat seal and hot tack initiation temperature, a high hot tack strength and a broad hot tack seal window. The multilayer structure is particularly useful as a biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) packaging film structure.

The subject invention provides a polymer mixture having high heat resistivity, low hexane extractive and controllably lower or higher modulus. The mixture is comprised of at least one first substantially linear ethylene polymer, Component (A), and at least one second ethylene polymer which is a homogeneously branched polymer, heterogeneously branched linear polymer or a non-short chain branched linear polymer. When fabricated into film, the mixture is characterized by a heat seal initiation temperature which is substantially lower than its Vicat softening point as well as a high ultimate hot tack strength. When fabricated as a molded article, the mixture is characterized by high microwave warp distortion while maintaining a lower modulus. The polymer mixture is particularly well-suited for use in multilayer film structures as a sealant layer for such applications as cook-in packages, hot-fill packages, and barrier shrink films. In molding applications, the mixture is well-suited as freezer-to-microwave food storage containers and lids which maintain good flexibility at low temperature to allow easy openability of such containers.

In particular, this invention relates to a biaxially oriented polyolefin shrink film made from a particular polymer mixture which includes a first ethylene polymer component having a single differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) melting peak or a single Analytical Temperature Rising Elution Fractionation (ATREF) peak and a second ethylene polymer component having one or more DSC melting peaks, wherein the density differential between the two component polymers about 0 to about 0.03 g/cc. Improved properties include increased shrink responses, wide orientation windows, higher modulus and high softening temperatures.

This invention relates to an improved shrink film obtained by selectively controlling and optimizing the melt index and density differential between at least two polyolefin polymer components to provide narrow density splits. One aspect of this invention relates to a biaxially oriented polyolefin shrink film having balanced properties and another aspect of this invention relates to an oriented shrink film having improved toughness. This invention also relates to a biaxial orientation method of making an improved shrink film using elaborate shrink orientation techniques such as tenter framing, double-bubble, trapped bubble, tape orientation or combination thereof. Most preferably, the first polyolefin polymer component is a lower density, substantially linear ethylene/&agr;-olefin interpolymer and the second polyolefin polymer component is a higher density, heterogeneously branched ethylene/&agr;-olefin interpolymer.

The present invention pertains to an ethylene interpolymer composition characterized as having a narrow molecular weight distribution (MWD) and optimized compositional uniformity, a process for making such a composition and a fabricated article made from such composition. The novel composition is characterized as having at least two polymer components, the first component having an ATREF peak temperature, Tpeak1 and a viscosity average molecular weight, Mv1, and the second component having an ATREF peak temperature, Tpeak2, and a viscosity average molecular, Mv2, wherein the temperature differential between Tpeak2 and Tpeak1 decreases with increased composition density and Mv1/Mv2 is less than or equal to 1.2. The novel composition is further characterized as having a Mw/Mn of less than or equal to 3.3 as determined by gel permeation chromatography, an I10/I2>6.6, and a composition density less than 0.945 gram/cubic centimeter. The novel composition exhibits high, balanced toughness properties, good processibility and surprisingly improved optical properties and is particularly well-suited for use in applications such as lamination films trash can liners and heavy duty shipping bags, especially as a blown film.
