摘要： A mold having a vee-shaped groove receives an optical fiber end in butted relationship with either another fiber end or with a mold wall surface which is perpendicular to the vee-shaped groove. Field forces are generated which urge unattached and disposable fiber seating elements into the groove, the seating elements in turn pushing the optical fiber end(s) into the groove until the side surface of the optical fiber end(s) are in tangential contact with both sides of the vee-shaped groove. While the optical fiber end(s) are so positioned, casting liquid is introduced into the vee-shaped groove. The seating elements remain within the casting.

摘要： A casting is made of a corner having three mutually intersecting flat surfaces, one of which is perpendicular to the other two, while a fiber end is positioned against the corner in an orientation such that the end of the fiber butts against said one corner surface and the side surface of the fiber tangentially touches said other two corner surfaces. Two such castings, each carrying a fiber end, are aligned with each other in an alignment frame having two flat alignment surfaces which are oriented with respect to each other at the same orientation as the two corner surfaces which tangentially touch the fiber side surface. Since these orientations are the same, the castings fit precisely into the groove formed by the two flat alignment surfaces of the frame and can be moved toward each other until they touch. In this position the fiber ends carried by the castings are butt aligned.

摘要： A protective reflex system for a portable computer hard disk initiates protective action before the hard disk suffers the shock of an impact in the event they fall from, for example, a user's lap. A three axis accelerometer is mounted in the portable computer. The output of the accelerometer is continuously monitored by a dedicated processor. In the event of an acceleration event within a preset range of values, the dedicated processor passes a high priority interrupt to the central processing unit of the portable computer and then proceeds to park the disk heads. Alternately, the interrupt routine of the central processing unit may also cause the park operation. In addition to park operation, a brake operation may be performed by either the dedicated processor or the central processing unit.

摘要： A write-once-read-once batteryless token stores access data using fuses similar to those found in programmable fuse link devices. These fuses indicate the status of a particular bit in either of two memory arrays. An intact fuse indicates that a bit is a logical zero, and a blown fuse indicates that a bit is a logical one. The process of reading a particular bit in either array causes the destruction of the corresponding memory cells in both arrays before the data from the selected cell becomes available to the reading device. The memory bit cells are destroyed by blowing the bit fuse during the read cycle.

摘要： Method and apparatus which restricts software, distributed on magnetic media, to use on a single computing machine. The original medium is functionally uncopyable, until it is modified by the execution of a program stored in a tamper proof co-processor which forms a part of the computing machine. The modified software on the original medium may then be copied, but the copy is operable only on the computing machine containing the co-processor that performed the modification.

摘要： A copy-protection scheme is implemented for software which may be stored on a magnetic storage medium such as a disk. The medium is comprised of sections which are divided into subsections, with an original having indicia on at least one subsection of at least one section that is not modifiable by the medium write process, with a copy having no such indicia, or having indicia in a different pattern. A product program may be stored on the medium, and is executable only if the particular medium is an original. A medium test program may also be stored on the particular medium, and is used to test if the medium is an original or a copy. The test program writes the sections with a test pattern which generates a change in the pattern of magnetic domains of the medium, a subsection at a time, with a subsection responding to the test pattern only in the absence of indicia thereon, to form a stored pattern on the given section. An expected pattern and the stored pattern are compared at least a subsection at a time to determine if corresponding subsections have a predetermined pattern of magnetic domains. The product program is executed only in response to the comparison determining that corresponding subsections have predetermined patterns of magnetic domains which is indicative of the presence of said indicia, and the particular medium being an original.
