A thermoplastic moulding composition comprising:(1.) 80 to 20 parts by wt. of a thermoplastic polycarbonate based on a dihydroxy diaryl alkane,(2.) 20 to 80 parts by wt. of a graft polymer of2.2. a monomer mixture, polymerized onto2.1. a diene rubber with a glass transition temperature below -30.degree. C., of2.2.1. 95 to 50% by wt. of styrene, methyl methacrylate or a mixture thereof; and2.2.2. 50 to 5% by wt. of acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile or a mixture thereof, the ratio by wt. of rubber (2.1) to monomer mixture (2.2.) being in the range of from 80:20 and 10:90, and the moulding composition containing from 5 to 35% by wt. of the rubber (2.1.), and(3.) 5 to 75 parts by wt. of a copolymer which is chemically uniform in structure and which comprises:(3.1.) 93 to 50 parts by wt. of styrene, methyl methacrylate or a mixture thereof;(3.2.) 40 to 5 parts by weight of acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile or a mixture thereof; and(3.3.) 2 to 30 parts by wt. of maleic acid anhydride.

The subject disclosure is concerned with a process for synthesizing soluble thermoplastic graft polymers of polycarbonate and ethylenically unsaturated monomers by polymerizing these monomers and aromatic polycarbonates carrying addition polymerizable end groups in a dilute solution of no more than 30 wt. % of reactants based on the weight of solution. The graft polymers so obtained are also encompassed by the inventive concept.

High molecular weight aromatic polycarbonates having molecular weights M.sub.w (weight average) of between about 10,000 and 200,000, which are based on diphenols and monofunctional chain stoppers, which correspond to the general formula ##STR1## in which Z denotes the radical of a diphenol,n denotes an integer from 20 to 400,E denotes ##STR2## m is 0 or 1 and R denotes a hydrogen atom or a C.sub.1 to C.sub.3 alkyl group, and in which between about 0.5 and 5 mol % of Z are radicals of aromatic dihydroxyketones. These polycarbonates share mechanical and thermal properties with known polycarbonates but in addition are suitable for crosslinking, for example in the presence of photoinitiators and optionally photo-reducing agents and under irradiation with UV light. When crosslinked they are resistant to organic solvents and insensitive to stress-cracking, and have particularly good flame-repellent properties when additionally incorporating flameproofing agents.

Thermoplastic molding compositions are provided comprising from about 80 to 98% by weight of a polycarbonate obtained from diphenols, having a mean weight-average molecular weight M.sub.w from about 10,000 to 200,000 and from about 20 to 2% by weight of a polyester-carbonate and/or polyether-carbonate with mean weight-average molecular weights M.sub.w of from about 50,000 to 300,000, which contain between about 50 and 70% by weight of soft polyester segments or soft polyether segments with mean number-average molecular weights M.sub.n of from about 10,000 to 20,000. The instant invention also relates to a process for the production of said thermoplastic molding compositions. These thermoplastic molding compositions show markedly improved resilience properties compared with known polycarbonates and can be employed as films and shaped articles in all cases where, on the one hand, high notched impact strength at low temperatures, high toughness properties at relatively high wall thicknesses, and transparency are required.

The present invention relates to a process for the modification of thermoplastic aromatic polycarbonates containing aromatically bonded halogen, primary alkyl, secondary alkyl and/or alkenyl substituents, characterized in that these polycarbonates are irradiated with UV light, after adding between about 1 and 5% by weight, preferably between about 1 and 3% by weight, relative to the weight of polycarbonate, of photoinitiators and optionally between about 0.05 and 5% by weight, preferably between about 0.1 and 2% by weight, relative to the weight of polycarbonate, of flame-proofing agents. The present invention also relates to the modified polycarbonates obtainable by the process according to the invention.
