This invention relates to a sintered hard metal for cutting tools and having excellent wear resistance, resistance to thermal deformation, mechanical strength and the like. The present invention resides in the fact that the substrate metal consists of a rich content of the B-1 type hard phase and the surface thin layer consists of a rich content of the ordinary tungsten carbide. B-1 type crystal structure contains one or more Group IVa, Va and VIa metals, carbon, nitrogen and, moreover, tungsten. The thin layer structure has the layer of 5 to 200.mu. thickness on the surface thereof.

The invention relates to a sintered hard metal having a high wear resistance and heat resistance as material for cutting tools and wear resistant tools and the method for producing the same. The sintered hard metal has a hard phase comprising a phase having a B-1 type crystal structure containing more than one kind of IVa, Va and VIa group metals in the Periodic Table and also the elements, carbon, nitrogen and oxygen and a WC phase, the hard phase and a bonding phase chiefly consisting of a ferrous metal which is sintered by a powder metallurgy technique, whereas the oxygen in particular is added thereto making it possible to obtain a sintered hard metal having said excellent properties.

There is provided a coated tool steel having a tool steel substrate and at least one layer of a hard film overcoated on the substrate. The film consists of a B-1 type solid solution selected from carbides, nitrides and carbonitrides of at least one of titanium, zirconium or hafnium, and the breadth of the peak, at half maximum intensity, of Cu-K.alpha. diffraction from the (200) plane of the film, being not less than 0.4 degree on a 2 .theta. scale. The invention further provides a machine tool having at least one cutting part thereof formed from the coated tool steel described above. The coated steel provided herein has excellent wear resistance.

The present invention relates to gaseous phase synthesized diamond and a method of synthesizing the same. In order to obtain crystalline diamond having remarkably high completeness and hardly containing carbon having a construction other than that of diamond, raw material gases are thermally activated by a thermoelectron-radiating material heated at an extremely high temperature, the thermoelectron-radiating material being connected to a negative pole while a substrate to be coated is connected to a positive pole, by the use of a direct current power source, a plasma being formed between the thermoelectron-radiating material and the substrate by applying a direct current voltage, and a diamond film having an average particle size of 2 microns or less, compression residual stress and electric resistance of 10.sup.8 ohm.cm or more being formed on the substrate by using the activation by the thermoelectron-radiating material together with the activation by the formation of DC plasma.In addition, homogeneous diamond particles uniform in shape can be obtained by using this method.
