A distributed control system has a plurality of controllers, program apparatus, and man-machine systems, which are all interconnected by LAN. The program apparatus is provided with functions corresponding to approval and rejection of operating conditions of the controllers, and a program is allotted to each controller by minimizing the values of the functions. Each controller is structured with the capability of detecting both a load ratio and a traffic quantity of the LAN, on the basis of the detection results, a change of allotment of the program allotted to each controller may be made.

In a neural network having neurons connected in a multi-layer, firstly, input signal sets are sequentially entered to statistically process the outputs of hidden neurons and determine the optimum number of hidden neurons. Secondly, while changing the input signal entered to each input neuron to the maximum change limit, the change of output values of the other input neurons are checked to thereby determine an unnecessary input neuron. Thirdly, the weights between input neurons and hidden neurons are set to be in correspondence with a hyperplane to enable pattern recognition.

A chaotic character evaluating apparatus includes a processor for predicting future variation in sequential data and a processing for determining a degree of accuracy of the prediction, a processor for predicting variation of the sequential data in reverse and a processor for determining a degree of accuracy of the prediction, and a processing for comparing the degrees of accuracy with each other. If the degrees of the accuracy differ from each other, the variation of the sequential data is determined to be attributable to chaos, while when the degrees of accuracy are substantially equal to each other, the variation in the sequential data is determined to be attributable to noise. Further, a control apparatus for generating a control value from a feedback signal output from an object under control and having chaotic components eliminated is realized. Thus, it is possible to easily and accurately determine whether variation in the sequential data is attributable to chaos or noise.

An input/output device has a processor which processes data strings received by the device. When a data string is received, it is passed to a serial interface and a timing means. The serial interface generates a signal which interrupts the existing processing by the processor and causes the process to start processing of the newly received data string. At the same time the timing means measures the length of the data string and compares it with a predetermined length set by user-controllable data setting means. If the data string length reaches the predetermined length, the processor is triggered to stop processing the new data string and to recommence the processing it was performing prior to interruption. The unprocessed part of the new data string is stored in a memory.In this way, urgent data strings, which are generally short, are processed rapidly and longer data strings are processed after the urgent data strings. It is not necessary for the data string to contain any information to identify its length.

A control system is for accelerating stabilization of a chaotic state of a controlled system into a desired periodic state. In the control system, the SOGY algorithm is extended to permit selection of a region on a chaotic attractor as a target, so that the SOGY algorithm can be successfully combined with the OGY algorithm for the purpose of stabilization of the controlled system in the periodic state. Also, the method of nonlinear prediction is introduced so as to secure the effectiveness of the SOGY algorithm. Further, an uncertainty of prediction is taken into consideration so as to eliminate unnecessary control and to improve the effectiveness of the SOGY algorithm.

An apparatus for performing a coating weight control calculation and an apparatus for generating an activation timing of each process in coating weight control are separately managed. A strip welding point pass event, a completion event of scan measurement of a steel strip in a width direction by a coating weight gauge, and a constant period event are related respectively to activation timings of preset control, feedback control and feedforward control respectively of a coating weight. In a coating weight control apparatus and method, the activation timing generation apparatus is equipped with a function of calculating a timing of changing a pressure reference avoiding insufficient coating in accordance with response characteristics of a pressure as an operation terminal, and if a target coating weight is changed from thin coating to thick coating, generating a preset control activation reference in accordance with the calculation result.
