When an abnormality detecting device detects an abnormality in a throttle valve, a determination device determines a normal throttle valve, and a second control device controls only the normal throttle valve in preference to the first control device to control the intake air amount, thereby ensuring continued operation even if a malfunction occurs in one of the throttle valves. Also, intake passages of the engine are divided into two systems and are individually connected with surge tanks, a communication passage communicating with the surge tanks and a communication control valve ae provided, throttle valves and intake control valves are disposed in the individual passages, and the throttle valves, the communication control valve and the intake control valves are open/closed controlled by the operation condition detecting device and control device, thereby obtaining good engine performance and ensuring continued operation of the engine even if a malfunction occurs in the throttle valve control system, to maintain the stability of the vehicle.

Described herein is a drive-by-wire vehicle engine output control system. The system permits good-response acceleration by a driver's simple and reasonable operation, i.e., by operating an accelerator pedal and also a prompt response even when a sudden load change occurs. Further, the system permits precise speed control by simple equipment even when the deviation of a vehicle speed from a target vehicle speed is large. Output changes of an engine can be controlled within a permissible output change range by (a) comparing a target autocruise engine output with an acceleration demanding ending output, choosing the larger engine output and then controlling the engine to give the larger engine output, (b) controlling the engine to achieve a target autocruise engine output obtained from a speed correction torque and a running load torque or (c) limiting an engine control quantity on the basis of a permissible output change value.

In an output control apparatus for an internal combustion engine according to this invention, a target torque of a driving shaft of an automobile is determined in accordance with the pedaling stroke of an accelerator pedal, and a deviation between the target torque and an actual torque of the driving shaft is obtained. On the assumption that the whole system of the automobile, including the internal combustion engine, is in a steady-state operation mode, on the other hand, a steady-state output torque of the internal combustion engine, required for applying the target torque to the driving shaft, is obtained. In the output control apparatus, moreover, a steady-state suction air amount of the internal combustion engine is obtained such that the steady-state output torque is obtained in the internal combustion engine, and this steady-state suction air amount is corrected in accordance with a feedback amount based on the aforesaid deviation, so that a target suction air amount of the internal combustion engine is determined, and the opening of a throttle valve is controlled so that the target suction air amount can be obtained.
