Abstract: A sol-gel material for overcoating a surface-relief structure includes a titanium(IV) precursor, and a titanium oxide stabilizer including R3OC(O)OR4, R5C(O)OR6, or a combination. R3 and R4 include alkyl or alkene groups optionally containing carboxylate, alcohol, or ester functionalities, such as propylene carbonate (PC). R5 and R6 include alkyl or alkene groups optionally containing carboxylate, alcohol, or ester functionalities, for example, a lactone such as gamma butyrolactone (GBL). In some embodiments, the sol-gel material includes a source of sulfate or phosphate anions, an acid, a base, a peroxide, a surfactant, a cross-linker, a flexibilizer, a toughener additive, a solvent, or a combination thereof. In some embodiments, the sol-gel material is annealed at a temperature between 50-150° C., and then annealed at a temperature between 200-300° C. In some embodiments, the sol-gel material is cured using ultraviolet light before annealing at a temperature between 200-300° C.

Abstract: A liquid optically clear adhesive (LOCA) for bonding optical substrates includes siloxane and epoxy-containing oligomers, a UV-activated photo-acid generator, a cross-linker additive, a solvent; and a reactive plasticizer, such as an additive of Structure 1. In one example, the additive of Structure 1 constitutes about 1-7% of a total mass of the LOCA excluding the solvent. R1, R2, and R3 of Structure 1 include methoxide, ethoxide, propoxide, or a combination thereof. R4 of Structure 1 includes an alkyl chain that is linear or branched and includes 2-8 carbons. The LOCA material is characterized by a refractive index equal to or greater than about 1.6 at 450 nm and an optical absorption below about 0.1% per micrometer of a thickness of the LOCA material.

Abstract: Techniques disclosed herein relate to sol-gel materials that include at least one metal halide precursor and at least one alcohol. After being annealed, the metal in the metal halide is in at least two different oxidation states, both of which are stable and transparent to visible light. By producing a mixture of the same metal in multiple oxidation states that are all transparent to visible light, an amorphous state of the sol-gel material without any noticeable domain formation that would otherwise distribute stress locally and lead to voiding inside nano-gratings to be overcoated is obtained. Highly condensed states of the sol-gel have refractive index values in the 1.7-2.2 range, without sacrificing recessed-feature fill.
