A "leaking" cyclone and process for fluidized catalytic cracking of heavy oils is disclosed. Gas and entrained solids are added tangentially to swirl around a vapor outlet tube in a cylindrical tube cyclone body. A concentrated stream of solids and some gas is withdrawn from the device through openings in the cylindrical sidewall remote from the inlet. Tangential withdrawal via an offset slit in the sidewall, or withdrawal through holes in the sidewall, replaces or reduces conventional underflow of solids from an end of the cyclone body. Fine (0-5 micron) particles removal is enhanced by withdrawing solids as soon as solids reach the cylindrical sidewall. The device may be used as a third stage separator on an FCC regenerator.

An improved stripper section design is provided for use in fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) units. The stripper section contains means for imparting rotational movement to the FCC cracking catalyst as it traverses the stripping section. In one embodiment the stripper section contains at least one rotation vane that is preferably disposed on the surface of a stripper section tray. The rotation vane provides angular, rotational movement to the cracking catalyst as it traverses the stripper section. Vertical movement is imparted to the cracking catalyst due to gravity and radial movement is imparted to the catalyst due to the slanted nature of the tray. Through the use of the rotation vanes the contact between the catalyst particles and the stripping steam is increased, thereby improving the overall efficiency of the FCC operation.

The present invention is an improved regenerated catalyst bend assembly for a fluid catalytic cracking unit. In a preferred embodiment, the reduced elevation (“RE-bend” or “REL-bend”) regenerated catalyst return line assembly of the present invention has an outlet elevation that is lower than the inlet elevation of the RE-bend or REL-bend regenerated catalyst return line assembly, and a process for utilizing the assembly in a fluid catalytic cracking unit. The present invention is especially useful in the modification of existing fluid catalytic cracking units to lower the elevation of the outlet of the regenerated catalyst return line assembly, thereby providing needed space to increase the fluid catalytic cracking reactor riser length.
