In a magnetic head employing a metallic ferromagnetic material for portions defining a transducing gap, an oxide film or carbide film and a nonmagnetic metal film are provided in this order on each of track width narrowing grooves, and glass is packed on the nonmagnetic metal film, thereby preventing the deteriorations of magnetic characteristics ascribable to the reaction between the metallic ferromagnetic material and the glass and the production of bubbles ascribable to the reaction between the protective films and the glass, and to achieve the enhancements of recording and reproducing characteristics, the prevention of damages to a recording medium surface, the increase of a head lifetime and the rise of the available percentage of manufacture of the heads. When a glass film is further provided on the nonmagnetic metal film and the glass is packed thereon, more excellent effects are achieved.

The invention discloses a magnetic recording and reproducing system using a composite magnetic head whose surface facing a magnetic recording medium is composed primarily of a ferromagnetic metal and a high permeability ferrite single crystal, and which has a region close to a gap and composed of the ferromagnetic metal, wherein the composite magnetic head is arranged in such a fashion that the {110} plane of the high permeability ferrite single crystal is made to substantially coincide with a plane forming a principal magnetic circuit of the composite magnetic head, that the direction lying inside the {110} plane is inclined at an angle of from 15.degree. to 75.degree. with respect to a direction perpendicular to the surface facing the magnetic recording medium, and that the magnetic recording medium travels in a direction which is relatively the same as, and parallel to, a vector formed by projecting a vector extending from the inside to the outside of the surface facing the magnetic recording medium in the direction, on the surface facing the magnetic recording medium. This magnetic recording and reproducing system can remarkably reduce the step occurring on the surface facing the magnetic recording medium due to wear caused by the travel of the recording medium, and can reduce any output deterioration and fluctuation resulting from the step.

A pair of througholes, through which the starting extremity and the ending extremity of each of a plurality of coil conductors disposed on the rotor core and the stator core constituting the rotary transformer are led to the respective rear surfaces, are linked by a linking slit. Alternatively one throughhole, through which both the starting extremity and the ending extremity of each of the coil conductors are led, is divided into two throughholes by disposing therein a non-magnetic partitioning member having a thermal expansion coefficient close to that of the magnetic body within a region of 15%. In this way, the two throughholes behave magnetically as if the starting extremity and the ending extremity of each of coil conductors passed through one throughhole, so that magnetic field components produced at the starting portion and the ending portion cancel each other and that the coupling coefficient between the rotor core and the stator core is increased.

A rotary magnetic head apparatus comprises a transformer core, including a rotor core and a stator core, a rotary drum, a stationary drum, and magnetic heads provided in the outer peripheral portion of the rotary drum. Signal transmission coils are disposed in a plurality of grooves formed concentrically in a surface of the core to transmit signals to and from the magnetic heads. Windings of each of the coils are positioned and lined with a flexible insulating layer so as to keep their mutual positional relation unchanged. The insulating layer is removed from the coil at portions corresponding to starting and terminating ends of the winding thereof. The insulating layer is bonded to the bottoms of the grooves. Through holes are formed in the core at positions corresponding to the starting and terminating end portions of the windings of the coil. Conductive junction members extend in the through holes and are electrically connected to the starting and terminating end portions of the windings of the coils to transmit signals to and from the magnetic heads.
