Abstract: In accordance with an embodiment, described herein is a system and method for supporting partitions in a multitenant application server environment. In accordance with an embodiment, an application server administrator (e.g., a WLS administrator) can create or delete partitions; while a partition administrator can administer various aspects of a partition, for example create resource groups, deploy applications to a specific partition, and reference specific realms for a partition. Resource groups can be globally defined at the domain, or can be specific to a partition. Applications can be deployed to a resource group template at the domain level, or to a resource group scoped to a partition or scoped to the domain. The system can optionally associate one or more partitions with a tenant, for use by the tenant.

A method can provide one or more partitions, wherein each partition provides an administrative and runtime subdivision of a domain, and one or more resource groups, wherein each of the one or more resource groups is associated with one of the one or more partition. The method receive, from an administrator, a request to perform a startup or shutdown, the startup or shutdown action being targeted to one of the one or more partition. The method can provide a lifecycle object, at an administration server, the lifecycle object associated with the one of the one or more partitions. The method can provide a monitoring object where the monitoring object can allow the administrator to monitor a status of the startup or shutdown action.

Abstract: In accordance with an embodiment, described herein is a system and method for providing federated configuration in an application server, enterprise computing, or other computing environment. A runtime domain configuration associated with a server can be derived from a base configuration, one or more configuration fragments, and one or more pluggable configuration transformers. Each configuration transformer can operate upon or revise a config descriptor's in-memory representation, for example by adding, deleting, or changing configuration elements within that representation. The changes made to an in-memory working runtime configuration can then be used to control the operating configuration and behavior of the server.

Abstract: A system and method for partition administrative (admin) targeting in an application server, cloud, or other computing environment. An application server can include one or more partitions, wherein each partition provides an administrative and runtime subdivision of a domain. An administrative virtual target associated with a partition enables an administrator to identify an administrative resource group, including one or more administrative applications or resources, for use with the partition. A partition administrative lifecycle state (e.g., SHUTDOWN) can be associated with various substates (e.g., BOOTED or HALTED). When a partition is associated with a first state or substate (e.g., SHUTDOWN.BOOTED), the administrative resource group in that partition continues to run at an associated target, while other resource groups are shut down. When a partition is associated with a second state or substate (e.g., SHUTDOWN.HALTED), all of the resource groups, including administrative resource groups, in that partition are shut down.
