    Abstract: An apparatus for handling a hollow glass article and forming a finish thereon in a production line. Glass articles, such as containers, having an integrally formed moil portion on the upper end of the container body portion are loaded in sequence in an upright position into uniformly spaced chucks on the upper run of a continuously moving endless conveyor. The conveyor carries the container around a vertical end turn to enable the moil to drop freely upon severance by a burner assembly extending along the lower run of the conveyor. The conveyor is of the endless chain type with container chucks mounted upon transversely extending link pins of the chain, the chain being guided throughout its path by stationary track assemblies upon which chain carried rollers are supported. A main drive sprocket is drivingly engaged with both the upper and lower runs of the chain at a location between the end turns, while a second or slave drive sprocket engages the lower run of the chain only. Tension in that portion of the lower run of the chain between the points at which it is engaged by the main and slave sprockets is regulated by adjusting the speed of the slave drive sprocket motor relative to the main sprocket drive motor, this particular section of chain traversing the burner assembly through which a relatively high degree of chain tension is desired. Longitudinally adjustable end turn track sections, combined with the three point engagement between the sprockets and chain enable the tension in various sections of the chain to be regulated or adjusted independently of one another. Parabolic merging sections of the chain track are provided between the horizontal upper and lower runs and the curved end turn sections to minimize centripetal acceleration imparted to chucks carried by the chain as the chucks pass from the straight upper and lower runs to the curved end turn sections.

    Abstract: An apparatus for handling a hollow glass article and forming a finish thereon in a production line. Glass articles, such as containers, having an integrally formed moil portion on the upper end of the container body portion are loaded in sequence in an upright position into uniformly spaced chucks on a continuously moving endless conveyor. The containers are carried through a first heating zone while being driven in rotation to achieve even thermal exposure of the containers. During transit of the first heating zone, the containers are passed around a vertical end turn to orient the containers in an inverted position, with the moil portion lowermost, as they pass along a horizontal lower run of the endless conveyor. During their transit of the lower run, the containers pass between a linear row of opposed burners which direct a high intensity row of flame jets against a narrow portion of the container body to first thermally sever the moil portion from the body and to subsequently form a beaded finish on the container. The containers are rotated during their passage through this set of burners at a controlled rate to achieve the desired finish formation. The finish is subsequently inspected and containers with malformed finishes are promptly ejected at the inspection station. Containers not ejected at the inspection station are subsequently lowered partially into the pockets of a synchronized pocket conveyor, the container chucks being opened when the container is partially inserted into the pocket to drop the container the remaining distance into the pocket.

    Abstract: Apparatus for handling and transferring bulb-shaped glass containers from one station in a container production line to another. A series of container handling vacuum chucks are linked together into an endless chain to pick glass containers in succession up from a first conveyor, to carry the containers through an inspection station, a coating tunnel and past a reject station and to then deposit the containers on a second conveyor. A control valve mounted on each chuck normally supplies the chuck with vacuum, however the control valve is actuated at the container discharge station, and may also be actuated at the reject station to supply air under pressure to the chuck to eject the container.

    Abstract: Apparatus for transferring bulblike glass articles from a ribbon-type forming machine to a receiving conveyor. The transfer apparatus includes a plurality of individual transfer devices mounted for movement along an endless rectangular path, one run of which extends in parallel operative relationship with the article-forming ribbon machine and another run of which extends in parallel operative relationship with a receiving conveyor. The individual transfer devices include an open-ended U-shaped article support yoke and a pair of article retainer fingers both mounted upon a carrier member mounted upon a carriage which is in turn mounted upon a bracket driven in movement along the generally rectangular endless path referred to above. The bracket is supported for vertical movement as it moves along its path, while the carriage is mounted on the bracket so that it may be extended or withdrawn horizontally in a direction normal to the path of movement of the bracket along its endless path. The carrier is in turn slidably mounted on the carriage for sliding movement parallel to the path of movement of the carriage on the bracket. Movement of the carrier relative to the bracket is confined to a range less than that of the movement of the carriage relative to the bracket, the excess movement or overtravel of the carriage as compared to the carrier being employed to open and close the retainer fingers at selected portions of the endless path. Vertical movement of the bracket and extending or withdrawing movement of the carriage upon the bracket is accomplished by means of cams mounted upon the frame of the transfer machine.
