    Abstract: A shape memory composite consisting of an electrospun non-woven fiber mat and an elastomeric resin matrix. The fiber mat is made from a semi-crystalline polymer, poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and serves as the “switching phase” for shape fixing and recovery. The resin matrix, a crosslinked PDMS elastomer, imparts softness as well as entropic elasticity to the material. PCL is first electrospun from a chloroform/DMF solution. The resulting microfiber mat was then immersed in a two-part (base resin and crosslinking agent) mixture of Sylgard 184 with a vacuum applied to infiltrate the fiber mat with the mixture. The infiltrated fiber mat is then removed from the mixture and cured at room temperature for two days.

    Abstract: Amphiphilic telechelics incorporating polyhedraloligosilsesquioxane (POSS) synthesized by direct urethane linkage between the diol end groups of polyethylene glycol (PEG) homopolymers and the monoisocyanate group of POSS macromers. The hydrophobicity of the amphiphilic telechelics can be varied by using PEG homopolymers of increasing MW, providing for control over molecular architecture by hydrophilic/hydrophobic balance. Methods for synthesizing the amphiphilic telechelics and their use as surfactants, thickening agents, additives to plastic such as PMMA′(Plexiglass), epoxyadhesives for improving their properties are also disclosed.

    Abstract: An enzyme responsive shape memory polymer formed from a glassy, cross-linked shape memory polymer that incorporates ester bonds that are responsive to the present of an enzyme. PCL-based polyurethanes (featuring simple alternation of PCL diol and lysine-based diisocyanate) are degradable by Amano lipase PS. A non-degradable thermoplastic elastomer may be dual electrospun with a polycaprolactone based TPU with the fixing phase compressed so that the composite is ready for enzymatically triggered contraction. Alternatively, the elastomer may be a PCL copolymer-based polyurethane amorphous elastomer that is both degradable and elastomeric and put into compression so that upon enzymatic degradation of the elastomeric phase the scaffold expands.
