A novel two-piece backing ring assembly for a railcar axle is presented. The backing ring assembly has an annular body affixed to the fillet of the journal and a locking ring for further affixing the annular body into position on the journal. The locking ring has an inboard end affixed to the dust guard of the shaft and an outboard end for engaging a slot in the annular body. The locking ring assembly may be retrofitted to older generation railcar axles to increase the structural rigidity of the bearing assembly and minimize fretting wear caused by railcar axle deflection.

A bearing assembly is presented having a novel lubricant sealing design that, in one embodiment, combines the advantages of contacting and non-contacting dust seals to balance energy efficiency while still providing an effective method for contaminant exclusion. The contacting and non-contacting dust seals further arranged to maximize the service life of the dust seals and prolong the maintenance intervals required on the bearing assembly.

The ink fill port receives ink fed from an external supply and to be printed by the print head assembly. The ink compartment stores the ink to be printed. The foam insert is in the ink compartment and takes up the ink to be stored. The spacer extends into the ink compartment, provides for the formation of a clearance between the foam insert and the ink fill port and surrounds the ink fill port either completely or with one or more gaps having a gap width. The gap width of none of the gaps presents an aperture angle of more than 25% of 36° with respect to a center of the ink fill port.
