Devices may be deployed downhole and operatively coupled to the power generator for their electrical power. A downhole power management technique for a downhole well control system maximizes the number of downhole devices which require electrical power. In accordance with this technique, downhole devices which require power and are addressable will be at a low power consumption state (e.g., sleep or dormant mode). When requested by a downhole or surface controller, the downhole device will turn itself on to an active mode and perform its intended function or task (such as transmitting data, acquiring data, actuating a tool or the like). Preferably, only one downhole device is in its active mode at any one time. As a result of this power management technique, the power requirement downhole will be relatively low and substantially constant regardless of the number of downhole devices requiring power.

A wellbore insert comprises a housing that further comprises an inner annulus and one or more ports dimensioned and configured to provide a fluid pathway between the inner annulus of the housing and the outer surface of the housing. A selectively movable port seal, operable via a port seal mover, is dimensioned and configured to selectively occlude or open these ports. A movable plug, controlled by a plug mover, operates within the housing to selectively permit or occlude fluid flow within the housing. A power supply and a detector are typically present within the housing. An individually addressable electronic control module is operable to effect a change in the position of the selectively movable port seal and/or the movable plug. The wellbore insert can be used for downhole operations such as frac operations.

The present invention provides systems utilizing fiber optics for monitoring downhole parameters and the operation and conditions of downhole tools. In one system fiber optics sensors are placed in the wellbore to make distributed measurements for determining the fluid parameters including temperature, pressure, fluid flow, fluid constituents and chemical properties. Optical spectrometric sensors are employed for monitoring chemical properties in the wellbore and at the surface for chemical injection systems. Fiber optic sensors are utilized to determine formation properties including resistivity and acoustic properties compensated for temperature effects. Fiber optic sensors are used to monitor the operation and condition of downhole devices including electrical submersible pumps and flow control devices. In one embodiment, a common fluid line is used to monitor downhole parameters and to operate hydraulically-operated devices. Fiber optic sensors are also deployed to monitor the physical condition of power lines supplying high electric power to downhole equipment. A light cell disposed downhole is used to generate electric power in the wellbore, which is used to charge batteries.

A downhole production well control system is provided for automatically controlling downhole tools in response to sensed selected downhole parameters. The production well having a production tubing string therein with multiple branches, i.e., zones. Communication and transmission of power (i.e. telemetry) over the production tubing string is by way of a combination of a hardwire system in the main borehole and a short hop system at the branches or laterals. Each zone includes a downhole control system and appropriate completion devices for controlling fluid flow. An acoustic or electromagnetic transceiver is associated with each control system for communication and/or transmission of power. An electrical conductor runs from the surface downhole along the production tubing string in the main borehole for communication and/or transmission of power, hardwired systems are well known. The conductor is connected to an acoustic or electromagnetic transceiver disposed at the production tubing string in the main borehole near each branch. These transceivers communicate with and/or transfer power to corresponding transceivers at the branches (i.e., short hop communications), which is communicated and/or transferred along the production tubing string on the conductor (i.e., uphole or downhole).

A downhole production well control system is provided for automatically controlling downhole tools in response to sensed selected downhole parameters. Each primary control system includes electromechanical drivers and devices to control fluid flow. A redundant control system is associated with each of the primary control systems. Each redundant control system is the identical its corresponding primary control system. The redundant control system is set to a sleep or dormant mode, while the primary control system is set to an active mode for collecting data, and communicating with the surface. In the event of a failure, the primary control system is switched to an inactive mode and the redundant control system is switched to an active mode, whereby it will now collect data, and communicate with the surface. Alternatively, both the primary and redundant control systems are set to an active mode, whereby both systems will collect the same data. The collected data is compared and if there is a difference, then the collected data for each system is checked to determine if the data for each system is within an operating range. If one of the systems contains data that is out-of-range, then the out-of-range system is switched to an inactive mode and the other system continues to collect data and communicate with the surface.

At least one of an injection of fluid into the injection well and a flow into the production well is controlled in response to the determined parameter.
