Abstract: The subject matter of this specification can be embodied in, among other things, a method for removing intermodal distortion that includes receiving a collection of distorted backscattered Rayleigh signals from a collection of modes of an optical fiber, where the collection of distorted backscattered Rayleigh signals are distorted by an intermodal coupling among the collection of modes, receiving a collection of distortion parameters that are descriptive of distortion effects of the intermodal coupling, and determining an undistorted backscattered Rayleigh signal based on the collection of distorted backscattered Rayleigh signals and the collection of distortion parameters.

Abstract: An apparatus for detecting and determining geometric features inside a borehole comprises a body section coupled to and deployable in the borehole by a conveyor, a head section having a first end pivotably coupled to the body section via a joint and a second end having an array of ultrasonic transducers. The array of transducers comprises, for example, a multiplicity of individual actuator elements and a multiplicity of individual sensor elements. An electronic control unit controls the timing of emission of ultrasonic radiation from the actuator elements of the array, receives signals generated by the sensor elements of the array, and controls movement of the head section via an actuator coupled to the joint. A method for reconstructing a geometry and detecting and identifying features in a borehole is also provided.

Abstract: In some embodiments, a method includes conveying a downhole tool in a tubing, positioned in a casing which forms an annulus between the casing and a wellbore formed in a subsurface formation, the downhole tool having a rotatable transmitter and a receiver array. The method includes performing the following until an acoustic transmission has been emitted for each of a number of defined azimuthal positions: rotating the rotatable transmitter to one of the number of defined azimuthal positions, emitting the acoustic transmission, and detecting, by the receiver array and without rotation of the downhole tool beyond a rotation threshold, an acoustic response of a number of acoustic responses that is derived from the acoustic transmission. The method further includes computationally rotating, by a processor and after detecting, data of each of the number of acoustic responses in a pre-determined direction to generate a computationally rotated multipole response.

Abstract: Some aspects relate to techniques for calibrating a logging tool. In some implementations, the logging tool may estimate certain unknown properties of a signal based on distances between transmitters and receivers of the logging tool and based on frequencies used by the transmitters and receivers. The logging tool may estimate the unknown properties by interpolating values into a mathematical function related to the above-noted distances and frequencies. After estimating the unknown properties, the logging tool may be deployed into the wellbore, where it may use the estimated properties to process signals received through a subsurface formation.

Abstract: Various embodiments include apparatus and methods implemented to take into consideration gauge length in optical measurements. In an embodiment, systems and methods are implemented to interrogate an optical fiber disposed in a wellbore, where the optical fiber is subjected to seismic waves, and to generate a seismic wavefield free of gauge length effect and/or to generate a prediction of a seismic wavefield of arbitrary gauge length, based on attenuation factors of a plurality of wavefields acquired from interrogating the optical fiber. In an embodiment, systems and methods are implemented to interrogate an optical fiber disposed in a wellbore, where the optical fiber is subjected to seismic waves, and to convert a seismic wavefield associated with a first gauge length to a seismic wavefield associated with a different gauge length that is a multiple of the first gauge length. Additional apparatus, systems, and methods are disclosed.

Abstract: The shear head device includes a monitoring head having geophones and transmitters inside a cylindrical body. A shear head is coupled to the monitoring head from below. The shear head has a tubular structure with a plurality of apertures formed around an outer surface of the tubular structure. A plurality of cones are coupled with modified tips and disposed within the plurality of apertures. A sheet supports the plurality of cones inside the shear head. The sheet is selectively movable between a first radial position and a second radial position for the modified tips to apply radial force to the rock by adjustment of an internal pressure of the shear head. The transmitters transmit the recorded acoustic emission to a computing system for determining properties of the rock while the shear head device is testing the rock in the bore.
