Methods and apparatus are discloses for position a vehicle. In one aspect, an apparatus for positioning a vehicle is provided. The apparatus comprises a plurality of receive, each configured to generate a respective voltage signal from a wireless magnetic field generated by a field generator. The apparatus further comprises a processor configured to determine a first set of data based on the respective voltage signals generated by the plurality of receive coils, and reduce the first set of data to a second set of data that is substantially constant regardless of relative rotation between the plurality of receive coils and the field generator. The apparatus is further configured to determine a plurality of candidate positions based upon the second set of data, which are used to determine a position and an orientation with respect to the field generator based on the first set of data.

An apparatus for determining a relative position of a wireless power transmitter from a wireless power receiver is provided. The apparatus comprises a plurality of sense coils, each configured to generate a respective voltage signal under influence of a first alternating magnetic field oscillating at two frequencies and a second alternating magnetic field oscillating at at least one frequency. The apparatus further comprises a processor configured to determine the relative position of the wireless power transmitter from the wireless power receiver based on the respective voltage signal from each of the plurality of sense coils.

An apparatus for determining positioning information for a vehicle may comprise a plurality of receive coil circuits and a hardware processor. The plurality of receive coil circuits is configured to generate voltage signals from a magnetic field. The hardware processor is configured to generate position estimates of a position of the magnetic field generator with respect to a position of the plurality of receive coils. Each of the first sequence of position estimates is determined based upon a corresponding voltage vector derived from the voltage signals and at least one of a plurality of reference vectors. The hardware processor is configured to update the plurality of reference vectors based upon the first sequence of position estimates and a second sequence of position estimates generated based upon a source different from the plurality of receive coil circuits.

An apparatus for determining a relative position of a wireless power transmitter from a wireless power receiver is provided. The apparatus comprises a driver circuit configured to generate a first signal and a second signal. At least one of the first signal and the second signal oscillates at two frequencies. The apparatus comprises a first generator coil configured to generate a first alternating magnetic field when driven by the first signal. The first generator coil is also configurable to wirelessly transfer charging power from the wireless power transmitter. The apparatus comprises a second generator coil configured to generate a second alternating magnetic field when driven by the second signal.

One aspect of the disclosure provides apparatus for detecting an object. The apparatus comprises a sense coil. The apparatus comprises a processor configured to determine an amount of change in a reactance of the sense coil from a previous reactance value for the sense coil. The processor is configured to determine an amount of change in a resistance of the sense coil from a previous resistance value for the sense coil. The processor is configured to determine a presence of the object based on a relationship between the amount of change in the reactance of the sense coil and the amount of change in the resistance of the sense coil. The processor performs an inverse tangent operation on a quotient of the amount of change in the reactance of the sense coil divided by the amount of change in the resistance of the sense coil.

An apparatus is disclosed for a hybrid foreign-object detection and position system. In an example aspect, a foreign object detection (FOD) system of the base power-transfer system detects a passive beacon of an electric vehicle power-transfer system based on a beacon loop of the passive beacon overlapping an array of FOD sense loops effective to cause a change in impedance or admittance of one or more of the FOD sense loops. In aspects, the impedance reflects a modulation signal from the passive beacon. A position detection system integrated with the FOD system determines a passive beacon response in the input data based on the modulation frequency from the passive beacon. Then, a position of the beacon loop is determined relative to the array of FOD sense loops using a result of the passive beacon response canceled from input data.

Guidance and alignment systems are disclosed for wireless charging systems to assist in aligning the transmitter and receiver inductive power transfer (IPT) couplers. These systems guide positioning and alignment to provide sufficient coupling between the transmitter and receiver IPT couplers. Exemplary systems provide a magnetic field sensor, magnetic field generator, and magnetic vectoring to determine a position of an electric vehicle or a wireless charging base. In a magnetic vectoring system, an alignment system comprising at least three coils (or similar circuits) on a magnetically permeable substrate receives a positioning magnetic field including modulated information signals and processes the received signal to generate an output for determining a position of the positioning magnetic field source relative to the magnetic field sensor position. The alignment system may further comprise a similar structure that generates the positioning magnetic field, that may include modulated information signals, based on input signals.

An apparatus for detecting a presence of an object is provided. The apparatus comprises an inductive sensing coil that is configurable to generate a magnetic field, the inductive sensing coil configured to have an electrical characteristic that is detectable when generating the magnetic field. The apparatus comprises an actuator configured to inducing relative motion between the inductive sensing coil and the object while the inductive sensing coil generates the magnetic field. The apparatus comprises a controller configured to detect a change in the electrical characteristic, and determine a presence of the object based on the change in the electrical characteristic correlating with the relative motion between the inductive sensing coil and the object. The electrical characteristic comprises one or more of an equivalent resistance, an equivalent inductance, an equivalent impedance, and an impulse response of the inductive sensing coil.
