摘要: An apparatus for correcting beam-to-beam spacing error on an image plane of a photoreceptor includes a controller which generates beam-to-beam spacing error corrections signals, a plurality of optical elements, each of which is adjustable and responsive to beam-to-beam spacing error correction signal and a gray level measurement device. The controller performs the beam-to-beam spacing error correction analysis, determining whether or not a correction is necessary, and if so, which optical element to adjust and the magnitude of adjustment. Enhanced toner area coverage sensors are used to detect the gray level of a toned area of raster scan line patterns at various locations across the photoreceptor image plane. By repeatedly evaluating the beam-to-beam spacing error during operation, the apparatus of the invention is able to correct beam-to-beam spacing errors that may develop during operation and does not permit residual errors to persist even after an initial correction has been implemented.

摘要: A sensor having a shutter mounted upon a shaft for rotation within a housing in opposition to a light path between an LED and photodetector is described. A potion of the shaft extends outside the housing connected to an elongated arm. A runner secured to the elongated arm, engages a moving photosensitive surface and deviations of the edge position of the photosensitive surface rotate the shutter in relation to the light path between the LED and photodetector for tracking the edge position of the moving photosensitive surface by providing signals representing shutter position.

摘要: The present invention is directed to a precise method of registering plurality of imaging stations, so as to form sequential images on a photoreceptor belt in a single pass. A belt hole is formed in the photoreceptor belt, outside the image area, but within the scan of the imager scan line. The scan line is sequentially swept in a transverse direction across the width of the belt. As the leading edge of the belt hole advances into the sweeping beam, a plurality of beam sweeps will occur while the leading edge is moving through the sweep area. Due to the gaussian illumination of the scanning beam, the exposure at the belt edge gradually increases to a maximum point coinciding with the maximum illumination of the scanning beam. A detector is placed beneath the belt to provide a signal representing the exposure level of each scanning beam which crosses the leading edge of the advancing belt hole. The detectors produce a current output representative of the exposure level. The current output is converted into voltage outputs which are then used in an extrapolation process to determine a midpoint for the illumination profile crossing the scan line and, from this, a reference time at which the midpoint of the beam illumination was reached. This reference time is then used to generate a precisely timed line sync signal which is reproducible through each of the imaging stations to produce registration of the first scan line of each image sequence with a very high degree of accuracy.

摘要: A developability sensing system with an optical sensor for measuring the density of imaging material samples on an imaging surface of a printer, with an illumination source and photosensor system for measuring the amount of reflected illumination from the imaging materials. A first lens system and its first photosensor may receive both specularly and diffusely reflected illumination from certain imaging materials. A separate lenslet system is positioned outside of the first lens system. It may comprise one to four spaced apart generally cylindrical lenslets with a central axis generally perpendicular to the imaging material sample and an end surface facing the imaging material sample defined by a segment of a hyperbolic curved surface to form a rotationally symmetrical lens with a hyperbolic cross-section. There are separate photosensors for these lenslets, which are positioned and optically adapted to only receive diffusely reflected light from the imaging material sample, even though reflected illumination from the imaging material sample has both specularly and diffusely reflected illumination from partially specularly reflective imaging materials.

摘要: An improved spectrophotometer for non-contact measuring of the colors of colored target areas, especially, test patches on moving printed test sheets in an unrestrained normal output path of a color printer, which test patches may be sequentially angularly illuminated with multiple different colors, with a photosensor providing electrical signals in response, the spectrophotometer having a lens system for transmitting that reflected illumination from the test patch to the photosensor with a lens magnification ratio of approximately one to one. The exemplary spectrophotometer provides noncontact color measurements of moving color target areas variably displaced therefrom within normal paper path baffle spacings, with a displacement insensitivity of at least 6 millimeters about a nominal target to spectrophotometer separation.

摘要: A low ink sensing system is combined with an ink cartridge detection system to enable a more efficient ink jet printer. An ink container which supplies ink to an associated printhead is modified by the incorporation of two light directing elements, in the preferred embodiment, a faceted prism and a roof mirror, into a transparent wall of the container housing. The cartridge, comprising the ink container and associated printhead, is mounted on a scan carriage. Periodically, the carriage is conveyed to a sensing station comprising a pair of light sources and a commonly used photosensor. A first light source is energized and a beam of light is directed to a location where the roof mirror, would be positioned if the cartridge is present. If the cartridge is absent, lack of a reflected return signal is sensed, indicating a cartridge has not been inserted. Print operation is halted until a cartridge is inserted. If a cartridge is properly inserted, the roof mirror returns most of the incident light to the photosensor which generates a signal indicating the presence of the cartridge. A second light source is then energized and directed towards the faceted prism, which is either immersed in ink or exposed to air within the interior of the container. If the latter, light is internally reflected by the prism facets back to the photosensor. If a print operation has been in progress, and the ink level has fallen, the common photosensor detects either a strong or weak redirected light component and initiates a status check and generates appropriate displays of low ink level or out of ink warnings.

摘要: An apparatus and method of adjusting an imager in an electrophotographic printing machine to correct for registration errors when forming a composite image. Registration errors are sensed by forming one or more target lines on the photoreceptor surface, detecting the center of the lines and controlling the operation of the imager in response thereto. In one embodiment, four LED print bars form a composite color image in a single pass. A photosensor is placed beneath the print bars; a narrow target line is formed on the belt surface a few scan lines before the start of an exposure frame. The center of the line is detected by circuitry connected to the sensor output which produces a signal corresponding to detection of the center of the target line. This output signal is generated for each of the three downstream print bars and a signal is applied to each print bar to start the image exposure sequence in registration with first image exposure. In a second embodiment, skew registration adjustments are enabled by forming two line marks at opposite ends of the photoreceptor, detecting the center of each mark and making the adjustments of the position of the downstream print bars based on time differences between detection of the generation of the two signals.
