Abstract: A clutch assembly includes inner and outer races supported for rotation about an axis and a one-way clutch element radially disposed between the inner and outer races. A first bearing is radially disposed between the inner and outer races and is seated on the inner race. A second bearing is radially disposed between the inner and outer races and is seated on the inner race. The first and second bearings are on opposite sides of the clutch element.

The drive assembly includes an axially movable turbine defining a piston of a lockup clutch; and a damper assembly including a first component including a plurality of first ramps and a second component including a plurality of second ramps, the first ramps configured for interacting with the second ramps to generate an axial force on the turbine during a coast condition of the torque converter, the damper assembly being arranged and configured to limit the axial force to prevent the piston from self-locking during the coast condition. A torque converter and a method of forming a drive assembly for a torque converter are also provided.

Abstract: A one way clutch with improved cage retention is disclosed. The assembly includes a housing with an opening having a first ramped portion defined on an inner periphery of the opening and a groove. A cage defines a plurality of rolling element pockets, and includes a first rim with a second ramped portion that corresponds to the first ramped portion. The first ramped portion of the housing is aligned with the second ramped portion of the cage during insertion of the cage into the opening of the housing for axial alignment of the second ramped portion and the groove. The cage is then rotated with respect to the housing such that the second ramped portion overlaps the first ramped portion to retain the cage in the housing.

Abstract: A wedge one-way clutch is provided for selectively transmitting torque between two components in one direction, and selectively locking rotation in another direction. The clutch has an inner race with a groove defined about its outer surface. The clutch has an outer race disposed radially outwardly from the inner race. The outer race has a sloped surface as part of a pocket. A wedge segment rests in the pocket. The wedge segment is moveable within the pocket, wherein the wedge segment has a taper or chamfer at its inner surface that engages with the groove in a slideable fashion. The wedge may also have a sloped surface that mates with and slides along the sloped surface of the outer race. The wedge can slide along the sloped surface, and along the inner race, so that the wedge wedges between the outer and inner races to lock them together.

Abstract: A switchable one-way clutch is able to switch between operating as a one-way clutch and a clutch that locks in both directions. The clutch includes an inner race, and an outer race that includes an inner surface with a plurality of ramped profiles. A control plate is located radially outward from the inner race and moveable in an axial direction relative to the outer race. A plurality of rollers are contactable with the outer and inner races. A roller cage is configured to position and contain the plurality of rollers. A hydraulic piston is coupled to an actuator arm, such that movement of the piston along the axis moves the actuator arm along the axis. To switch and engage the clutch such that rotation is locked in both directions, the piston and actuator arm move axially to hold the control plate and attached roller cage against rotation.
