ALTERNATING COPOLYMERS OF ACRYLONITRILE OR AN ACRYLIC COMPOUND AND TERMINALLY ETHYLENICALLY UNSATURATED HALOGENATED HYDROCARBON ARE PRODUCED BY REACTING AN UNSATURATED HALOGENATED HYDROCARBON MONOMER, SUCH AS VINYL CHLORIDE, VINYLIDENE CHLORIDE, ALYL CHLORIDE OR P-IODOSTYRENE, WITH A CONJUGATED VINYL COMPOUND, SUCH AS METHYL ACRYLATE, N-BUTYL ACRYLATE, N-ETHYL ACRYLAMIDE, METHYL THIOLACRYLATE AND ACRYLONITRILE, IN THE PRESENCE OF AN ORGANOALUMINUM COMPOUND, SUCH AS ETHYLALUMINUM, SESQUICHLORIDE, ETHYLALUMINUM DICHLORIDE, METHYLALUMINIUM SESQUIBROMIDE AND TRIALKYLALUMINUM. THE REACTION MAY BE CARRIED OUT OVER A WIDE RANGE OF TEMPERAUTES (-150*C. TO + 100*C.) BUT LOWER TEMPERATURES ARE PREFERRED. THE PRODUCTS IN GENERAL ARE CHARACTERIZED BY A SUBSTANTIALLY 1:1 MOLAR RATIO OF THE STARTIN POLYMERS, A HIGH MOLECULAR WEIGHT AND AN INTRINSIC VISCOSITY WITHIN THE RANGE OF FROM 0.1 TO 10.

Ethylene, propylene and similar olefins, with or without a conjugated or non-conjugated polyene (e.g., isoprene, 1,4hexadiene, 5-ethylidene-2-norbornene) are copolymerized in solution with a catalyst based on organoaluminum compound (e.g., ethylaluminum sesquichloride) and vanadyl compound of the type VO(ORm)X3 m where R is cyclic hydrocarbon, X is halogen and m is 1 to 3 (e.g., vanadyl tricyclohexoide, monovanadyl dicyclohexoxide, dichlorovanadyl bornyloxide, monochlorovanadyl dinorbornyloxide). Use of a vanadyl compound having a cyclic hydrocarbon substituent provides a catalyst having enhanced ability to incorporate diene, including conjugated diene, into the copolymer.

A novel alternating copolymer is prepared by copolymerizing a compound having a polar group, such as a carbonyl or thiocarbonyl group, at a non-conjugated position and a conjugated vinyl compound in the presence of an organoaluminum halide. Alternating copolymers thus-produced are superior in thermal stability to conventional random copolymers and is resistant to coloration. Alternating copolymers obtained by copolymerizing vinyl acetate and methyl acrylate or acrylonitrile are preferred examples of these products.

THE OXYGEN OR ORGANIC PEROXIDE PROMOTES THE DESIRED COPOLYMERIZATION REACTION OF A MIXTURE OF THESE MONOMERS TO PRODUCE AN ALTERNATING COPOLYMER.

A sulfur-curable olefinic copolymer consisting essentially of 1. AT LEAST ONE 2-NORBORNENE COMPOUND HAVING AT THE FIFTH POSITION OF THE NORBORNENE NUCLEUS A HYDROCARBON GROUP CONTAINING AT LEAST 3 TO 200 ACYCLIC AND NON-CONJUGATED CARBONCARBON DOUBLE BONDS, AND 2. AT LEAST ONE MEMBER SELECTED FROM THE GROUP CONSISTING OF ETHYLENE AND Alpha -OLEFIN HAVING THREE TO 20 CARBON ATOMS. This sulfur-curable olefinic copolymer has excellent cocurability with a diene rubber and produced by contacting said 2norbornene component and ethylene and/or said Alpha olefin with a catalyst consisting essentially of an organoaluminum compound and a member selected from the group consisting of a vanadium compound having at least trivalencies and a titanium compound having at least trivalencies.

SAID ACRYLIC COMPOUND IS COPLYMERIZED WITH A TERMINALLY UNSATURATED HYDROCARBON, SUCH AS PROPYLENE, ISOBUTYLENE, STYRENE, ETHYLENE AND THE LIKE TO FORM A COPOLYMER, WHICH IS A 1:1 ALTERNATING COPOLYMER CONTAINING ALTERNATELY THE TWO MONOMER UNITS. THE PRESENT INVENTION HAS, FOR THE FIRST TIME, ENABLED A 1:1 ALTERNATING COPOLYMER TO BE PRODUCED FROM THE COMBINATION OF MONOMERS FROM WHICH ONLY A RADOM COPOLYMER HAS HERETO FORE BEEN PRODUCED, AND ALSO ENABLED A HIGH MOLECUALR WEIGHT POLYMER TO BE EASILY PRODUCED FROM THE COMBINATION OF MONOMERS, WHICH ARE DIFFICULT TO COPOLYMERIZE.
