Disclosed is a carbonate polymer composition comprising (a) a carbonate polymer having a weight average molecular weight of from about 20,000 to about 40,000 and (b) from greater than about 0.1 to less than about 1.0 weight percent (based on carbonate polymer composition weight) low volatility aromatic phosphate ester compound, and optionally (c) from about 0.001 to about 0.1 weight percent (based on carbonate polymer compositions weight) of an alkali metal salt having a pH of at least about 7. Preferably the low volatility aromatic phosphate ester is selected from the group of aromatic phosphate ester oligomer compounds or haloaryl phosphate compounds. It has been found to be preferable to use a low volatility aromatic phosphate ester which experiences a weight loss of no more than 5 weight percent at 250.degree. C. when heated to a temperature of 500.degree. C. in a thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) at a heating rate of 20.degree. C. per minute, more preferably no more than 40 percent at 300.degree. C. It has been found that these compositions surprisingly achieve the Underwriters Laboratory (UL-94) V-2 rating without significantly sacrificing the otherwise good combinations of properties of carbonate polymer resins.

A process for dispersing one or more powdered ignition resistant or flame retardant additives into carbonate polymers which comprises the steps of preparing a base concentrate having about 5 to about 50 weight per cent of said additives by blending said additives with a carbonate polymer having a melt flow rate from about 3 to about 20, pelletizing said base concentrate having said ignition resistant additive dispersed therein, dry blending said concentrate pellets with carbonate pellets having a melt flow rate from about 1 to about 80 whereby said polymer/concentrate blend has an amount of said additive dispersed therein effective to render said blend ignition resistant, and pelletizing or molding said carbonate polymer/concentrate blend. The use of this method gives ignition resistant carbonate polymers with improved impact properties as measured by Izod impact tests.

The present invention relates to a blend of polymeric materials comprising; (A) of from about 1 to about 80 percent by weight (based on the combined weights of Components A and B) of at least one substantially random interpolymer; wherein said interpolymer; (1) contains of from about 0.5 to about 50 mole percent of polymer units derived from; a) at least one vinyl or vinylidene aromatic monomer, or b) at least one hindered aliphatic or cycloaliphatic vinyl or vinylidene monomer, or c) a combination of at least one vinyl or vinylidene aromatic monomer and at least one hindered aliphatic or cycloaliphatic vinyl or vinylidene monomer; (2) contains of from about 50 to about 99.5 mole percent of polymer units derived from at least one aliphatic &agr;-olefin having from 2 to 20 carbon atoms; (3) has a melt index (I2) of from about 0.01 to about 100 g/10 min; and (4) has a molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn) of from about 1.5 to about 20; (B) of from about 20 to about 99 weight percent based on the combined weights of Components A, and B of one or more engineering thermoplastics.
