This invention relates to a photosensitive polymer composition containing as essential components (A) a soluble polymer, (B) a photopolymerizable compound having an ethylenic double bond in the molecule there of and (C) a photopolymerization initiator, the soluble polymer comprising a water-soluble polymer and an alcohol-soluble polymer, the composition having a sea-and-islands structure comprising sea containing the water-soluble polymer as a main component and islands containing the alcohol-soluble polymer as a main component, and the islands are independently in the form of sphere or oval having a diameter of 0.1 to 20 microns. The photosensitive polymer composition affords a printing plate having high image reproducibility and water-developability and capable of withstanding the coating of an aqueous polymer according to a printing method.

A method for producing a printing plate which involves forming an image on the surface of a sheet having open cells by selectively applying a thermal exposure to the surface of the sheet. The sheet is a thermoplastic resin preferably having melting point between about 50.degree. to 150.degree. C. The resulting printing plate has a planar surface with no relief sections; instead there are porous and nonporous sections, with the porous sections being permeable to ink infused within the printing plate. A method of printing using the above plate is also disclosed.

Additionally, and a process for producing a photopolymerizable resin composition comprising reacting partially saponified polyvinyl alcohol having a degree of saponification of 60 to 99 mol % and a number average degree of polymerization of 300 to 2,000 with a carboxylic acid anhydride in a molten state to prepare (A-2) modified polyvinyl alcohol and mixing modified polyvinyl alcohol (A-2) with (C) a polymerizable unsaturated compound having an ethylenical double bond in the molecule thereof, and (D) a photopolymerization initiator is disclosed. The photosensitive resin compositions provide a printing plate material having high sensitivity and highly precise image reproducibility, from which material is obtained a printing plate whose relief has excellent toughness. The use of the modified polyvinyl alcohol obtained by a molten reaction makes it easy to prepare a solution of a photosensitive resin composition.

The composition of the present invention is quite effectively usable for the preparation of photosensitive resin printing plates having excellent water developability, image reproducibility and printability.
