An induction motor is operated by a power supply of variable voltage and variable frequency. The voltage and frequency of the variable-voltage variable-frequency power supply is changed by a control circuit to accelerate or decelerate the induction motor. For slowly controlling the speed of the induction motor, the ratio of the output voltage to the output frequency of the variable-voltage variable-frequency power supply is maintained substantially constant. The control circuit includes a voltage correcting means which, in response to a command for sudden acceleration or deceleration of the speed of the motor, corrects the output voltage of the power supply in accordance with the acceleration or deceleration rate and the prevailing magnitude of the output frequency of the variable-voltage variable-frequency power supply.

At least one smoothing reactor is connected to the positive terminal of a DC source. A first interphase reactor has its one end connected to the other end of the smoothing reactor. A second interphase reactor is connected to the negative terminal of the DC source. Each of the first and second interphase reactors has first and second terminals at the other end thereof. Connected between the first terminals of the first and second interphase reactors is a first inverter comprising three main valves on each side of the positive and negative terminals, i.e., a total of six main valves each having a control gate and forming a first three-phase bridge. Also connected between the second terminals of the first and second interphase reactors is a second inverter comprising three main valves arranged on each side of the positive and negative terminals, i.e., a total of six main valves each having a control gate and forming a second three-phase bridge. The three-phase output terminals of the first and second inverters are respectively connected in common to a load to supply first-phase, second-phase and third-phase output currents to the load. A control unit applies control gate pulses to the control gates of the positive-terminal-side and negative-terminal-side main valves of the first and second inverters in the order of the first, second and third phases to shape the waveform of each output current to the load into a rectangular waveform. The control unit controls the first and second inverters in such a manner that the current valves of two currents which flow to the main valves of the first and second inverters having the same phase and polarity includes ranges in which the currents periodically assume the same current value.

A current source inverter having a converter for changing alternating current into direct current, an inverter for changing the d.c. output of the converter into alternating current, and a reactor interposed between the converter and the inverter comprises power failure detecting means for detecting the power failure of the a.c. input of the converter. The power failure detecting means is constructed of square wave generator circuits which generate square waves when voltages in respective polarities of respective phases of the a.c. input exist, an adder which adds the outputs of said square wave generator circuits, and a comparator which compares an output of said adder with a predetermined value and which provides an output when the adder output is below the predetermined value. Both terminals of the reactor of the current source inverter are substantially short-circuited by the output of said power failure detecting means, thereby to prevent occurrence of an overvoltage at the time of the power failure of the a.c. input of the converter.

To each connection point between a thyristor and a diode, there is connected one end of one of a plurality of commutating capacitors, while the other ends of the capacitors are connected in common. An auxiliary charging source is provided between the common connection of the commutating capacitors and one of the terminals of the D. C. source for performing an auxiliary charging for each commutating capacitor through a respective thyristor. Between one of the terminals of the D. C. power source and the common connection of the commutating capacitors, a series circuit consisting of a diode and an auxiliary D. C. source is provided constituting a by-pass for the charging voltage of the commutating capacitor when the associated thyristor is in the ON state.

A method and an apparatus for controlling the operation of the synchronous motor are disclosed in which the synchronous motor is started with a starting power supply and operated with a steadying power supply. The starting power supply is adapted to alternately repeat acceleration and deceleration of the synchronous motor in the neighborhood of the frequency thereby to bring the synchronous motor into the point where the synchronous motor is in synchronism with the steadying power supply. The starting power supply comprises a current control circuit and a phase angle control circuit, which circuits control the motor current in such a manner as to prevent the voltage drop due to the synchronous reactance of the motor from exceeding the induced voltage of the motor, while at the same time controlling the power factor angle to be in the range from a lead 90.degree. to the angle corresponding to a maximum output point produced by said motor current.

A plastic optical fiber preform including deposition layers having a gradually decreasing refractive index distribution is formed by changing the mixing ratio between the polymer A and the refractive index modifier constituting the deposition layer.
