    摘要: A process for producing a preform for glass fiber for optical transmission by heating supply gases to form fine particles that are deposited on a rotating starter member to form an aggregate of fine glass particles which are then sintered to give a transparent vitreous material, characterized by a first heating stage wherein the aggregate of fine glass particles is sintered by increasing the temperature at a constant rate in a gaseous atmosphere which contains a halogen or halide and which has dehydrating activity, followed by holding the aggregate for a given period of time at a temperature in the range that causes considerable shrinkage of the aggregate, and a second heating stage where said aggregate is heated to the vitrifying temperature.

    摘要: A single-polarization single-mode optical fiber comprises a core made of silica glass, a clad surrounding the core and made of silica glass having a smaller index of refraction than the glass comprising the core, a pair of stress applying members symmetrically disposed on the clad and made of silica glass having different thermal expansion coefficient from that of the clad, spacers interposed between the stress applying members and made of silica glass having substantially the same thermal expansion coefficient as the clad, and a jacket surrounding the spacers, stress applying members. The jacket is also made of silica glass and has a smaller expansion coefficient than the stress applying members. The optical fiber of this invention has an excellent polarization preserving characteristic, low loss, long length, and stable characteristics.

    摘要: A process for producing an optical glass product having a predetermined distribution of refractive index in the interior of the product is disclosed. The process comprises the steps of:(a) preparing an aqueous silicate solution containing from about 0.1 to about 0.6 mol/liter of Si (as SiO.sub.2) comprising silicic acid and at least one element selected from the group consisting of rubidium, thallium and cesium;(b) mixing the silicate solution with an acidic aqueous solution, and letting the two solutions react with each other for a period of time sufficient for polymerization to produce a porous gelled product wherein the silica particles are agglomerated;(c) leaching the gelled product with a liquid selected from the group consisting of water, a weakly acidic aqueous solution, an aqueous solution having an alkali metal salt dissolved therein and an aqueous solution of organic matter capable of dissolving Rb.sub.2 O, Cs.sub.2 O, or Tl.sub.2 O, unitl the center of the product starts to dissolve; and(d) drying the leached product in a predetermined atmosphere, and further heating the partially leached gelled product at a temperature sufficiently high to eliminate the particulate material but lower than the melting point of the silica.
