A number of fish may be counted by emitting an ultrasonic wave or an electromagnetic wave toward a predetermined area of a body of water where fish pass (e.g., a fish farming pool, a river or the like). Reflected waves are received from the fish bodies so that the reflected waves received from a cross section of the predetermined area are periodically stored. An ultrasonic wave fish shade image is produced that shows changes of fish shades. Fish are counted by performing an image processing which discriminates the ultrasonic wave fish shade image based on a predetermined fish shade decision rule. This arrangement reduces errors occuring due to muddiness and dust in the water and allows an automatic continuous fish counting ability over a long time period.

The apparatus also includes a control circuit coupled to the first and second sensors for increasing a predetermined degree and narrowing the predetermined width of therefor the insensible range in response to the vehicle speed signal having a period within a predetermined range and a peak-to-peak value greater than a predetermined value and the throttle-valve position signal having a period within a predetermined range and a peak-to-peak value greater than a predetermined value. The control circuit moves the throttle valve the predetermined degree in a closing direction in response to the sensed vehicle speed greater than the upper limit and moves the throttle valve the predetermined degree in an opening direction in response to the sensed vehicle speed less than the lower limit.

A signal generating portion provides a third signal in response to the applied voltage from the voltage applying portion to another input end of the control circuit. Thus, the cancel switch signal can be distinguished and identified from the other switch signals derived from the set/coast and acceleration/resume switches even if one or all of the signal lines has failed.

The present invention enables tomography data in the sea to be collected and transmitted via an artificial satellite to a ground station. Accordingly, data on the Doppler phenomenon and shift of a sound wave is also obtainable based on the temperature and density of sea water and an ocean current. This makes it possible to obtain information about a wide sea area, such as the relationship between the KUROSHIO and the El nino which is now attracting attention in relation to fishery, agriculture and abnormal weather. Hence, the present invention will be of wide application.
