The alternating-current generator includes a housing having two end shields, a stator bundle and a rotor mounted in the housing so as to be rotatable in the stator bundle. The stator bundle includes two bundle halves and at least one center lamination between the bundle halves. The at least one center lamination is clamped between the end shields of the housing by bolts and has an outer diameter larger than an outer diameter of the stator bundles at least in the vicinity of the bolts so that the stator bundles are not under compression forces in the assembled generator. To facilitate economical manufacture of the stator bundle each of the center laminations is made from a plurality of individual interlocking segments. Each of the segments is advantageously circular arc shaped and provided with an interlocking device for connection with adjacent segments. The interlocking device can be a projecting portion at one end face of one segment which engages in a recess formed in an adjoining end face of an adjacent segment.

Operating noise of a dynamo electric machine, and particularly a three-phase vehicular-type alternator, can be reduced by changing the reluctance or permeability of the magnetic path between rotor and stator of adjacent stator teeth by splitting the stator teeth to introduce additional radially extending gaps in the stator teeth or by distributing, non-uniformly or uniformly, ferromagnetic slot closers about the circumference of the stator slots while leaving, adjacent a stator slot with a magnetic closer, open stator slots or slots covered only with non-magnetic slot cover elements, such as treated paper, cardboard, or the like. This changes the frequency of attraction between rotor and stator to a frequency range which is not humanly perceptible or annoying, for example falling below the frequency range at which the alternator can operate, for example below idling speed of an internal combustion engine driving the alternator, or towards a frequency range so high that the operating noise level of the internal combustion engine masks any generator noise.

The first, second and third winding for the stator of a three phase AC machine having n grooves per pole and phase are wound either sequentially or simultaneously. When wound sequentially, the first, second and third winding start at, respectively, a first, second and third groove and end at a first, second and third end groove. The starting grooves are adjacent grooves, that is spaced from each other by a number of grooves equal to n. The same is true for the end grooves. The wires are then interconnected such that the winding start and the winding end of the second winding are electrically interchanged. The winding process takes place in one direction only. When all windings are wound simultaneously, the winding process takes place in a first direction and, upon reaching the end grooves, the winding direction is reversed without creating a winding end at the end grooves. The winding ends are created when the winding in the opposite direction is completed.

In an apparatus for noise reduction and damping in ventilators of electric machines, in particular vehicular alternators, it is proposed that the ventilator support on the rotor shaft be effected by axially staggering inner rubber inlays on both sides and providing adjoining outer spring pressure elements such that the ventilator region is clamped, at least in the axial direction and preferably radially as well with an additional rubber ring. As a result, the transfer of resonant vibrations of the rotor to the ventilator are reliably avoided, and the noise emissions are decisively reduced.

A temperature and/or speed-responsive switch can be interposed between the alternator and the motor to energize the motor only if the temperature of the alternator and/or the engine, or other component, rises above a predetermined level, or if the alternator speed drops below a predetermined level.

In order to prevent the exertion of high pressure during the installation of electrical slip rings on the armature shafts of electrical machinery, and to provide secure holding of the slip rings without exerting radial stresses, the slip ring retainer mechanism according to the invention provides pressure rings which are mounted on the armature shaft and which engage respective end faces of the electrical slip ring. In a preferred construction, the slip rings are loosely slipped over an intermediate metallic bushing on which the compressive rings are then press-fit so as to bear against the sides of the slip rings. The intermediate bushing has an outer insulating layer and the pressure rings may be provided with electrical connectors for coupling to the exciter windings on the armature. The end faces of the slip rings may be suitably shaped or grooved to make form-fitting engagement with similarly shaped mating surface features of the compression rings.

The stator of a three phase AC generator is wound automatically. A first set of partial windings consitutes the first winding. Each of the partial windings has at least one turn. The first partial winding is wound in slots 1 and 4 in the clockwise direction, the second in slots 7 and 4 in the counterclockwise direction, etc. Before the second partial winding of the first set is wound, the first partial windings of the second and third phase are wound in slots 2 and 5 and 3 and 6, respectively. Similarly, after the counterclockwise winding in slots 4 and 7, the second partial windings of the second and third phase are wound in the counterclockwise direction in slots 8 and 5 and 9 and 6, respectively. This procedure is repeated until all slots are filled. If the same winding profile is to be maintained throughout, the part of the first partial windings associated with the first, second and third phase to be inserted in slots 1, 2, 3, respectively, is left out of the slots until the last partial winding of the phases has been wound. The loose ends of the first partial windings are then pushed into the respective slots. After the partial windings are connected to each other to form the first, second and third main windings, the winding starts and the winding ends of these main windings are connected together to form the desired electrical configuration. In this connection, the start and end of the second winding are electrically interchanged, to create the required 120.degree. phase difference between all the windings.
