Abstract:
A fluid-operated brake actuator having a hollow actuator rod between a spring chamber of a spring brake housing and a spring chamber of a service brake housing incorporates a valve within the actuator rod. The valve isolates the two spring chambers from each other in normal operation and releases a vacuum in the spring brake housing spring chamber when the spring brake is activated. A separate one-way check valve mounted in a well of the spring brake housing permits fluid to exhaust from the spring chamber to atmosphere and prevents contaminants in the atmosphere from entering the spring chamber.
Abstract:
A fluid-operated combination diaphragm spring brake has a tamper-resistant connection between a head and a flange case which together form a spring chamber housing a power spring. The head has an annular flange and an axial rim, and the flange case has an annular flange and an axial rim, The flanges of the head and the flange case and at least one of the rims of the head and the flange case define an annular recess. A diaphragm is sandwiched between the flanges and substantially fills the annular recess, removing substantially all the air within the annular recess. A welded connection radially adjacent the diaphragm secures head rim to the flange case rim.
Abstract:
An air-operated combination diaphragm spring brake has a tamper-resistant connection between a head (46) and a spring side of a flange case (18) which together form a spring chamber (16) housing a power spring (66). The head (46) has an annular rim (70), and the flange case has an annular flange (78) with a diaphragm (48) sandwiched therebetween. A plurality of tabs (102) on one flange rotate into L-shaped channels (94) to lock the head to the flange case with a bayonet style engagement. An alternative embodiment employs threads (112, 114) on the head and adapter flanges to seal the spring chamber. A further embodiment seals the head to a cast flange case using a threaded hoop 116 fitted over the flange case to engage the threads on the head flange.
Abstract:
An axle bracket for mounting a vehicle suspension system to an axle for ground-engaging wheels. The axle bracket incorporates a wrapper plate complementary to the surface of the axle. The sides of the wrapper plate extend to approximately the midpoint of the axle and is welded thereto. The wrapper plate may incorporate one or more fingers on the ends thereof. In addition to fingers, one or more notches may be incorporated on the end of the wrapper plate. The wrapper plate is welded to the axle such that the weld is tapered toward the end of the finger and may wrap around the end of the finger. The finger and notch configuration and tapered weld create an axle bracket able to withstand the torsional and shear forces as well as driving or breaking torque incidental to the operation of the vehicle.
Abstract:
An electromagnetic drive clutch for the compressor in an air conditioning system for a bus used both in the city and in over-the-road operation incorporating two drive pulleys of different diameters, concentrically arranged armatures connected with the respective pulleys by a spring assembly, concentrically arranged coil assemblies and a common rotor associated with the coil assemblies and armatures to selectively drive the rotor from the smaller or larger pulley thereby varying the drive speed of the compressor and thus varying the output characteristics of the compressor to enable adequate cooling to be provided for the interior of the bus during over-the-road movement when the engine speed of the bus is relatively high and also adequate cooling during city driving when the engine speed of the bus is relatively low. The specific structural arrangement of the components of the drive clutch enables effective installation in new construction and also easy retrofit onto existing air conditioning compressors for buses with the specific construction and orientation of the components and their functional relationship being different from existing drive clutches for air conditioning compressors.
Abstract:
A clutch pulley assembly primarily designed for use with electromagnetic clutches for driving air conditioning compressors on automobiles and the like wherein the component parts of the clutch pulley assembly are fabricated from stampings with a reduction in the amount of machinery required to complete the device. The method of making and assembling the structure is part of the invention and includes the press forming of a web disc for supporting pulley grooves from sheet steel having desirable magnetic properties to produce an annular flange portion thereon at the outer edge thereof and extending substantially perpendicular thereto, then punching a central hub receiving aperture in the disc and then mounting the central aperture of said disc on a central hub made from a tube section. A die forming method of manufacturing a pulley groove is also disclosed. A section of steel tubing is cut to length, this section is press formed by axially moving dies, and then the pulley groove is completed by both axially and radially moving forming dies of multi-segment type. The pulley groove thus formed is then pressed upon the machined outer flange surface of the web disc in which magnetic flux blocking slots have also been punched.
Abstract:
A fluid-operated brake actuator having a housing with one or more vent openings in communication with an interior chamber is provided with a filter assembly mounted to the housing over the vent openings. The filter assembly includes a gas permeable filter element, with oleophobic and homophobic characteristics so that air entering the service brake inner chamber from the atmosphere will be substantially free of contaminants
Abstract:
A brake actuator (10) for a vehicle comprises a service brake housing (14), a tandem spring brake housing (16) and a diaphragm (52), dividing the interior thereof into a first spring chamber (62) and a second spring chamber (63). In one embodiment, the first spring chamber (62) is completely sealed from the environment, being open only through a hollow actuator rod (56) connected to the diaphragm (52) and extending from the first spring brake chamber (62) into the service brake housing (14). A control valve (300) in the actuator rod (56) controls flow through the actuator rod (56) and is closed when the actuator rod (56) is retracted and also when the actuator rod (56) is extended to apply the brakes. The control valve (300) is open only as the diaphragm (52) and actuator rod (56) are moving. In an alternative embodiment, the spring chamber (63) has one-way vents (100) for releasing pressure therefrom and a control valve (120) in the actuator rod (56) for blocking flow therethrough when the actuator rod (56) is in a retracted position.
Abstract:
A spring break actuator (10) with a cast aluminum adapter (74) partially defining tandem spring brake and service brake portions has several corrosion fuses on the adapter. Each corrosion fuse is defined by a recessed or thinned area which does not compromise the structural integrity of the adapter.
