A read/write head for an information recording apparatus having a liquid bearing lubricant between a rotating storage medium and the read/write head is disclosed. The head is provided an actuator to position the read/write head over the rotating storage medium. The head includes a slider body having at least a first and second regions; and an interface element comprising a transducer interacting with the storage medium and mounted on the first region of the slider body. A relative motion exists between the head and the rotating storage medium and the slider body is supported by the liquid bearing lubricant during such motion, such that the first region of the slider body is supported at a first distance above the storage medium, and the second region of the slider body is supported at a second distance above the storage medium, whereby the first region of the slider body has a substantially higher drag than the second region when the head moves relative to the storage medium.

A head rotator assembly (22) for positioning a head (20) of a tape drive (10) relative to a storage tape includes a head supporter (230) and a supporter mover assembly (232). The head supporter (230) is coupled to and supports the head (20). The supporter mover assembly (232) rotates a portion of the head supporter (230) about an axis (241) to move the head (20) in an azimuth direction relative to the storage tape as the storage tape moves over the head (20). The head rotator assembly (22) includes a controller (16) that controls movement of the supporter mover assembly (232) based on a positioning signal. The supporter mover assembly (232) can include a first actuator (234A) that moves a first lever (236A) to rotate the head supporter (230) to move the head (20) in the azimuth direction. The first actuator (234A) biases the first lever (236A) to rotate part of the head supporter (230) to move the head in the azimuth direction.

In a method of electronically measuring reader/writer offset in a tape drive head, a plurality of sequentially adjacent data tracks are written on a tape with a write head. Error rate information is measured while reading a data track of the plurality of sequentially adjacent data tracks with a read head of the tape drive. A bathtub shaped curve is built from a set of the error rate information which is accumulated by reading the data track at a plurality of offsets of the read head relative to the data track. Offset of the read head relative to the write head is measured by determining an offset of the read head which correlates to a magnetic center of the data track as represented by a center point between edges of the bathtub shaped curve.

An actuator assembly (22) for positioning a head (16) of a tape drive (10) relative to a storage tape that moves along a tape path (24) includes a first actuator (228), a second actuator (230) and a controller (26). The actuators (228, 230) move the head (16) in a direction that is substantially perpendicular to the tape path. The first actuator (228) is mounted to the second actuator (230) at a location that is based on a position of a resonance node (680) of the second actuator (230). The controller (26) controls linear positioning of the first actuator (228) and the second actuator (230) relative to the storage tape on a closed-loop basis. The actuators (228, 230) can each include voice coils (246, 260). The second actuator (230) can include two positioner guides (253A, 253B) that are configured in a substantially collinear configuration or in a triangular configuration with the head (16). The first actuator (228) can include an isolation boot (232) that decreases vibration of the first actuator (228) caused by vibration of the second actuator (230). The actuators (228, 230) can have resonance frequencies that are different from one another. The first fundamental resonance frequency can be tuned based on the second resonance frequency to decrease a correlation between the resonances of the actuators (228, 230).

A servo-controlled, head actuator design that has low profile characteristics in both the height and width dimensions. The low height allows the actuator to fit into a half-high tape drive form factor. Additionally, in some implementations, the actuator comprises a smaller, concentrated moving mass coupled with a flexure construction having a narrowed width with added ribs for torsional stiffness. These aspects of the actuator provide a higher second mode of vibration compared to the flexure designs of the prior art. The actuator includes a coarse actuator assembly for larger movements of the head, and a fine actuator, including a Voice coil motor, responsive to analysis of servo signals. In some embodiments, the voice coil motor of the fine actuator and the coarse actuator shafts are in line. Since the centerlines of the shafts are in-line with the voice coil motor, the resonance response of the shaft spring-mass system is reduced.

A control system and method for operating a system comprising a host computer, a buffer, a tape drive and a tape is provided. The method includes writing data to the tape while the tape is traveling at a first speed; stopping the tape; determining a minimum distance to reposition the tape; and, thereafter repositioning the tape.

A servoing system is provided for use in an arcuate scanner having an arcuate scanner head assembly (ASHA) that has least one transducer on a rotatable drum. The servoing system includes a first detection circuit, a second detection circuit, logic, and a positioning apparatus. The first detection circuit is coupled to the transducer and detects alignment identifiers that are recorded on the tape and sensed by the transducer. The second detection circuit is also coupled to the transducer and detects an envelope of the scanned signal during the scan. The logic compares the alignment identifiers to determine if the ASHA is properly aligned with the tracks on the tape, and in response outputs a fine error signal. The logic also compares the envelope as detected during the scan with a threshold value and outputs a coarse error signal in response. Based on the arrangement of the logic, the fine error signal identifies that either a minor misalignment of the transducer to the tape exists or a proper alignment exists. The coarse error signal identifies that a significant misalignment of the transducer to the tape exists. The positioning apparatus, in response to either the fine error signal or coarse error signal, changes the position of the arcuate scanner head assembly with respect to the tape as a function of the received error signal.

An arcuate scanner in accord with the invention records information on a longitudinal tape in a predetermined format. The format includes a top servo region and a lower servo region approximately twice as wide as one data track width. The top servo region contains a burst of recorded servo signal at a predetermined location. The lower servo region contains another burst of recorded servo signal at a predetermined location. Between each pair of top and lower servo regions, the information format includes two arcuate data tracks, containing a series of data blocks of a specified format. The locations of the servo bursts in the respective servo regions alternate between two lateral positions in adjacent servo tracks. During reading operations, a read head centered over one data track will pass both the servo regions around that data track and a portion of each of the servo regions around an adjacent track. A circuit samples the amplitude of the servo signal, taken during different time windows corresponding to passage over the various servo bursts in the two tracks. One or more relationships between the amplitudes of predetermined pairs of samples are used to produce one or more position error signals. Control elements, such as a tape drive motor and a position alignment controller (e.g. tilt motor) adjust the operation of the scanner system in response to the position error signal(s).

A method and arrangement that provides the proper timing for starting the search for a format timing mark on arcuate data tracks recorded by an arcuate scanner prevents mis-identification of the format timing mark caused by same azimuth interference. Mis-identification of the format timing mark is avoided by preventing reading of the signal from a first azimuth read head of arcuate scanner until the read head reaches a safe zone in its data track. The safe zone is a pad area written by a first azimuth write head, located on a data track between two pad sections of second azimuth data tracks written by second azimuth write heads. In the safe zone, it is not possible for the first azimuth read head to read two adjacent pad sections of the first azimuth written by two different first azimuth write heads. Once in the safe zone, the read signal from the first azimuth read head can be safely read to look for the format timing mark. Safe zones for each of the other read heads are similarly established between two pads of different azimuth. To assure that the read head is within the safe zone when the read signal is read by the read channel, a timing signal is precisely generated that causes the read channel to start searching for the format timing mark in the safe zone, this timing being based on a defined reference point on the recording tape.

An apparatus and method for providing adaptive disturbance compensation with multi-rate synchronized sampling is disclosed herein. The dynamic disturbance occurring in a media drive during read/write operations is attenuated using the adaptive disturbance compensation scheme. A plurality of compensation filters are used, each of the compensation filters configured to attenuate a disturbance caused by a particular source within the media drive. Each of the compensation filters is computed based on a sampling rate relevant to the respective disturbances.
