An arrangement for varying the tape tension in a magnetic-tape apparatus includes a pivotably supported sensing lever (15) whose free end is pressed against the magnetic tape (14) under the influence of a spring (16) and, upon deflection from a neutral position (15'), is reset to its neutral position (15') by a control device (17, 18) through a variation of the tape tension. In order to enable the tape tension to be rapidly reduced for operation in the stand-by mode, an actuating mechanism (20) can be activated separately and includes a resilient actuating lever (22) which extends into the pivoting range of the sensing lever (15) upon activation of the actuating mechanism (20) and causes this sensing lever to be deflected in opposition to the force acting on the sensing lever (15).

The ram has a wire pusher adapted to push a wire into a contact in the connector and the connector is stepped across the ram path so that on successive ram strokes wires can be inserted into respective contacts. Reversible indexing structure is provided comprising an index wheel (33) driven on withdrawal of the tool ram through a lost motion coupling (34) and a fork arm (54). The wheel (33) engages pitch pins (10) and precise indexing is controlled by a register pin (38) on a spring lever (39). A moveable slide (49) selectively engages the fork with opposite sides of wheel (33) to effect indexing in opposite senses.

The wires are then cut and the clamped array of wires is moved laterally of the axes of the wires past a succession of crimping machines or the like. At each of the machines, a preselected wire is moved axially from the array so that its end is presented to the machine and a terminal is crimped onto the wire. The method of the invention is capable of producing harnesses comprising a plurality of discrete wires having different types of discrete terminals on their ends.

Crimping press comprises an anvil and a die which is movable towards and away from the anvil. The anvil is moved by a rotating shaft having a crank-type coupling to the die. The shaft is capable of limited movement in the direction of movement of the die towards the anvil. The shaft is supported against such movement by a yieldable shaft support that is calibrated to resiliently yield upon development of a predetermined reaction force in the die during the final stages of crimping. When a terminal is crimped onto a relatively small diameter wire, the shaft will not be moved at all or will be moved by only a slight amount if the predetermined force is reached. When a terminal is crimped onto a larger diameter wire, the predetermined reaction force will be developed before the die reaches the limit of its travel towards the anvil and the shaft will move away from the anvil to accommodate the remaining movement of the crank pin.

The lead parking and sorting station is for receiving electrical leads (L), especially those which differ from one another and for presenting the leads for pick up by a block loading station. The parking and sorting station comprises a pair of ganged jaw wheels (12 and 16) each having lead gripping jaws (13). The jaw wheels (12 and 16) can be swung to move each jaw wheel ( 12 and 16) between a lead loading position (LP) and a lead sorting and discharge position (DP). When in its loading position (LP), each jaw wheel (12 and 16) is driven by a unidirectional stepping motor (14) in constantly spaced steps, to pick up a lead (L) at each step. When it has been loaded with leads (L) each jaw wheel (12 and 16) is swung to its sorting and discharge position (DP) where it is driven by a bidirectional stepping motor (18), in steps, the length and direction of which are determined by a pre-arranged harness making program, the leads being picked up by the block loading station at a pick up position (PP).
